Mayor of Toronto has admitted to smoking crack cocaine.

I'm not sure how much of this story any of you have heard, especially outside Canada - but Rob Ford, mayor of Toronto (where I live), has admitted to smoking crack. I have never supported this man or his policies, and he has such a questionable past that is now being confirmed by police.

Mayor Rob Ford won't step down despite crack use - Toronto - CBC News

Back in May of this year, two reporters from the Toronto Star newspaper received an anonymous lead from some Somali drug dealers, saying that they had a cell phone video of the mayor appearing to be smoking from a crack pipe at a house that was already known to police as a "drug house". The reporters got to view the video, and the next day they reported what they saw. Ford lashed out at the Star, accusing them of slander and threatening to sue them for defamation of character, and adamantly insisting that there was no video.

He remained silent for an entire week about the ordeal, and then finally answered questions saying that he has never done drugs, is not an addict, things like that. Meanwhile, the video had "disappeared". A few days ago, the chief of police held a press conference and stated that their IT department had recovered the video as part of a bigger drug raid. He stated that the mayor does appear in the video and that it is consistent with what the media had reported.

Ford made a very vague apology on Sunday, during his radio talk show, regarding his "past mistakes". He has had too many incidents involving questionable behaviour in the past, such as:
  • Being visibly drunk and heckling fellow spectators and players at a Leafs game while he was a councillor.
  • Receiving a DUI in Florida.
  • Being openly drunk at the Danforth street festival this year, and representing himself as the mayor while drinking.
  • Getting drunk at the St. Patrick's Day parade, and grabbing a woman's bum while making a sexual remark towards her (I totally believe this now).
  • Networking with gangsters and people who are known to police in his private time (one of them, Alexander Lisi, has now been charged with extortion in relation to the crack video - Ford asked him to use any means to obtain the video and then told reporters it didn't exist)
  • Writing a reference letter, using official city letterhead, for a convicted murderer so he could be hired as a tow truck driver in the city.

Despite all of this, and his obvious substance abuse issues, he is not stepping down. I really think, for the sake of his family, his children, and himself, that he should at least take a leave of absence and go seek treatment or counseling of some sort. What he should actually do is resign, though.

Rob Ford is the instigator of his own demise here. He lied and then let that lie fester for almost 6 months, and now it's just snowballed. This is only the tip of the iceberg and he knows it.

Honestly, who smokes crack just once during a "drunken stupor" and then never touches it again? I've never heard of that.

Plankton 11-06-2013 10:44 AM

Hmmm, seems like I've heard of this before:

Marion Barry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Scarlett O'Hara 11-06-2013 10:52 AM

That is bloody ridiculous. He is not setting a good example and absolutely needs to resign. Isn't he supposed to be upholding laws? He is very obviously in need of a family/friend intervention as it's clear he's got issues with how much he's drinking and allegedly a crack user. He must take us for idiots by thinking it will blow over. I believe he needs to resign, go to a rehab facility (so not to endanger any more lives on the road) and then he might still be able to have a role in politics once he's back on track. But the fact that he's been dealing with well known drug dealers is asking for trouble.

LoathsomePete 11-06-2013 10:53 AM

What is it with Canadian mayors and crack? I seem to recall back in 2005 during the Vancouver Mayoral election there was a video that was released of incumbent mayor Sam Sullivan letting someone smoke crack in their van.

Cuthbert 11-06-2013 11:15 AM

:D

Surely resignation is the very least he should do, I mean he obviously has no credibility after this. Apparently he pissed all over the pavement as well :D.

Sansa Stark 11-06-2013 11:16 AM

I'd much rather smoke crack then listen to Snow Patrol.

I have, but only out of curiosity. I didn't like it. Yucky taste. Yucky hit. Yucky comedown. Yucky in every sense.

It is possible to try drugs like crack and heroin without becoming an addict.

Sansa Stark 11-06-2013 12:33 PM

Coke is terrible in general

Mr. Charlie 11-06-2013 12:34 PM

Agreed. Creates very hollow thoughts and synthetic feelings.

Are you addicted to crack cocaine? I think you have your answer then.

Sansa Stark 11-06-2013 12:35 PM

Coke is never necessary

No, but there's a certain misconception that certain drugs are somehow instantly addictive.

Sure, although I believe Rob Ford has done crack more than this one time. He definitely has a drinking problem that he needs to sort out.

He's totally embarrassed this city and is embarrassing the whole country now that the story has gone worldwide. And he thinks he is invincible and above the law.

He comes across as a prick in the video, and I don't believe anyone in a position of power and influence should be doing crack.

 at that gif

I can understand a few lines, I reckon they're all probably at it anyway but crack is just extreme.

Mr. Charlie 11-06-2013 01:01 PM

I figure what one puts inside their own body, does to their own consciousness, it's one's own perogative. But when one has responsibilities to others, be it kids, or serving the people... yeah, it's probably not a good idea.

bob. 11-06-2013 01:07 PM

a few thoughts on this

as Plankton pointed out Marion Barry was caught on tape and with a prostitute and was re-elected

Toronto elected a man who admits to having a major alcohol problem

i've tried crack....it was good....gets you real high real quick....would never try it again

out of all the ties in this guys closet.....he chooses the vintage NFL tie to wear while for the press conference where he admits to something he has been denying for weeks

i really wish Chris Farley was still alive right now

and never miss a chance to plug a Revolting Cocks song

Burning Down 11-06-2013 01:14 PM

He was elected before any of this actually came to light. He duped everybody.

bob. 11-06-2013 01:16 PM

i was under the impression that his alcoholism was well known before he was elected....again only get snips of the full story

Plankton 11-06-2013 01:19 PM

He really has lost touch with reality. He needs to step down and get his life back on track.

How is he supposed to fuel his crack addiction. Not a chance.

There was one incident of him being a drunken idiot at a hockey game a few years ago while he was a city councillor, but it really was not an issue for people during election time since most didn't know about that. There is only a year left until the next mayoral election in this province, and Ford will be running again. I doubt he will be re-elected after this debacle, though.

Ford's Policy Adviser just quit today (and an alarming number of his staff have left since these allegations came out in May... suspicious). Policy adviser quits Mayor Rob Ford's office amid crack scandal - The Globe and Mail

There was also his conflict of interest case that happened in June, where he used official city letterheads to solicit donations for the football team that he coaches. Top court dismisses final appeal in Rob Ford conflict case - Toronto - CBC News
