Well, like the US, while it can be traced to the early settlers, the official holiday wasn't proclaimed until relatively recently

I have to agree. We have a similar situation here in NZ because the European's took over the country and forced the Maori out of there lands and introduced them to tobacco and alcohol. To this day they have been trying to get their lands back but its very difficult for the government to give it back to them (I'm not sure why). It's not fair to blame our current generation because out ancestors stole their land. I do however think we need to respect them and their beliefs.

Worked all day. Client went home. Went to coworkers family dinner. Backwoods racist types. Accepted well with my shaved head and long beard lol. Great food today
