ebola has already killed nearly 4000 people, with 8000 more infected. There's also reports that these numbers are low, the figures being potentially much higher if more infected people were admitting it.

To put this in perspective normal flu kills around 250,000 to 500,000 people a year.

I don't think it's a year, i think certain years/pandemics have reached that proportion. The normal flu has a preemptive shot you can receive(western world predominately, but efforts to distribute it globally have been going for nearly a decade) and overwhelmingly effects the elderly.

I get what your saying, but those numbers still aren't over one million. Granted that's only a prediction, but startling nonetheless.

If people wanna be dumb and touch dead bodies riddled with disease in some outdated barbaric death ritual... I say let's westernize them so this **** doesn't happen anymore.

Otherwise, its a continuing cycle of third world cultures doing third world **** and first world doctors coming to fix it.

Call me pessimistic but when I read about stories like this still occurring in 2014, I doubt I'll ever see those primitive superstitious beliefs and rituals eradicated in my lifetime...

In Tanzania, albinos are killed and dismembered because of a widespread belief that charms made from their body parts bring good fortune and prosperity.
Yeah... you need science.

Is it impractical to think a country could be educated without westernizing them? There has to be a way around turning everyone into coca cola drinking consumerists.

I think she was referring to western medicine.

Carpe Mortem 10-10-2014 06:37 PM

I was, but really more than anything their beliefs and rituals would need to change for real improvement to stop such rampant spread of disease and infection.

Personally, I don't actually give a ****, but it comes down to preserve the culture or preserve the people. Either way, you're an ******* for ruining their culture or you're an ******* for letting them hurt themselves.
