Alright, I'll give you that one. Just don't expect that to become a normal thing.

But to get back on subject, being educated in a Muslim country is a cruel joke. All that learning for what? So some a-sshole cleric can overrule you with the worst quranic drivel ever dredged up in the mind of man? While all the arseholes around you agree with him because they're too stupid or too scared to disagree? For the sake of intelligence, decency and individual freedom, that religion needs to die.

I agree with your first sentence, given the fact that the whole concept of learning is actually meant to broaden the mind and encourage freedom of expression, but of course I'm saying that as a westerner.

The concept of education though is very different in a communist or muslim state, where the state in the former controls the information that can be obtained (I'm not sure how they could control that now with internet) or in a muslim state where religious authority dictates the type of knowledge that can be accepted for the good of their society.

I imagine that there are a number of educated muslims who have no misgivings of how things operate concerning education in their own countries, as it's a system that is normal to them and they probably wholly agree with the religious controls imposed, basically the polar opposite of how we view education here in the west. It's really just a question of what a person or society are used to.

But education frees the mind, that is its raison d'etre. While some people may mindlessly embrace their culture, these are more likely to be uneducated than educated people.

What does a well educated man living under sharia law do when he knows its nothing but self-serving bulls-hit? He may not have misgivings, as you say, but what does he do when he does have them?

So what? What good is his education when he lives in a society in which he cannot think freely but must subordinate that education to a religion so medieval and barbaric that no one truly educated could possibly subscribe to it if given a choice? And what good is an education to a psychopath for whom killing large numbers of people means nothing except that it makes him look like a badass? What do I need an education for if my life consists of convincing a poor, dumb, sexually-repressed rube like you to blow yourself up in a crowded marketplace so you can get your pencil-dick sucked by 72 virgins in Paradise?

As said before, these people accept that their education is controlled to a degree by the religious society that they're in, for many it's quite normal and the way of things and a trade off for a comfortable life.

The only thing that he can do and that is leave the country, the Middle Eastern diaspora is quite large in Europe and some of those dislike the control of religion over their lives back home. By leaving though under those circumstances they often can't go back without some fear of retribution. I've met a number of Iranians over the years here that fall into this category.

Well, how would you convince them otherwise?

it sounded to me like you were dismissing their level of education on the basis that they are from "muslim countries." i'm just saying being from egypt doesn't invalidate his education. he had a medical degree - the **** does that have to do with islam or '72 virgins'?

my main point is that the common narrative that these are backwards, oppressed & ignorant people is false. many of the terrorists are well educated and wealthy men - in scientific fields as well.

how does this help them...? well i'm sure it doesn't hurt...

also, it goes beyond the 72 virgins thing. to keep harping on that like that's the only reason for islamism is a complete oversimplification. the main concern of islamists is the establishment of an islamic caliphate, not virgins.
