I think they trade "influence" from within a social structure to a paramilitary one. They probably see themselves as having (probably) more influence within their network of insurgents and terrorists.

why though? bin laden was part of one of the wealthiest families in saudia arabia. he could've held influence with a much more prestigious crowd if he put his mind to it. do you doubt the sincerity of their dedication to the creation of an islamic caliphate?
