It's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Boys propose because it's expected in our culture. So when a girl proposes, the assumption that boys should propose plays into people guessing at what the motivation was for the girl proposing was (as evidenced in this thread). Dude didn't have the balls? She's crazy? Desperate?

Not that I think it's fair, but it seems to be how it is.

Actually though I generally get the impression that women find it more meaningful to be proposed to, whereas dudes might feel emasculated and wouldn't think its romantic no matter how its done. Society isn't there yet. Abolish marriage.
