It's especially obvious since I'm fairly certain that Trump wouldn't be where he is without all of the negative publicity following him through his campaign. It's his key tactic to build recognition (which, in the end, is more important than policy, race, party, or any other reason people vote for someone).

Exactly. He could easily dumb it down and act normal, but people think he's saying crazy things on accident. Not at all. He's acting crazy so people will talk about him thus increasing his popularity. I'm sure 90% of the things he says he doesn't even believe himself.
