So if we say something someone on the staff finds offensive in a debate we get banned? That is probably the best way to run a successful website I have ever heard. I'm sure that in no way has anything to do with why this place is in decline. Hitler did absolutely nothing wrong.

If you don't like it, leave.

Why do some of you fail to understand that this isn't 4chan and that there is a limit to what you can say on here? And for the record, JWB earned his ban over the last two years. It wasn't just because of the last few days. Also, did you see what was said before I deleted the posts or are you just assuming? Also, if you did see the posts, do you feel that saying the victims deserved it and that we should eliminate any French regardless of race part of a debate? Also, who are you?

Also, let me point out the guidlines to this particular sub-forum that only few bother to read...

This post is a remake of Ethan's old sticky.

Because this forum typically deals with topics that are often close to heart for many of us, discussions here sometimes get heated. If you see a post that offends you, please try to keep it civilized and treat others with respect. The rules apply just as much here as anywhere else on the forum and even if you get away with an insult, that doesn't mean we didn't notice. We do keep an eye on members even if we don't always moderate right away.

We'd like to keep discussions here somewhat intelligent, so please - if you make a post or a thread, make an effort. Please don't make threads where you simply post a video that sums up your argument rather than presenting it in text. This is a forum and if you can't write up your arguments in words, don't bother. Also, if you can - please provide sources when asked for.

Happy debating!

Is JWB permabanned or temporarily banned?

If he was permabanned I don't think it was fair.

He didn't break any of those rules, he never implied that other lives matter less just the truth of how we (being society) react to it, while trying to figure why we react that way. Silly him, Joker already explained.

There's also a more silent effect. When I saw what was going on in this thread, I had the gut reaction of not wanting to use this site again, even though I'm here to talk about music. It's not enjoyable, and it certainly wasn't beneficial to the discussion. It's a music forum, so I'm not expecting high intellectual discourse. At the same time, one has to question if they want to be around the type of environment where a bunch of losers make jokes about a serious incident that just happened, without a shred of dignity, and it's OK and/or a regular thing. I've felt the mod team get involved too quickly before and I'll also not be a part of an over-moderated site, but the mods were right on this one.

Yeah reading people say things you don't like is awful. I just kind of move on with my life.

But banning people works too, exalted ones. And what do you mean who am I? I'm random member #33543. You really shouldn't pull the "if you don't like it then leave" card as a member of the staff. It makes you sound like one of those dicks who actually take forum stuff really seriously which I am assuming you are not because you are the opposite of banned.

While I'm at it free Soulflower you racist ass.

He broke the rule about trolling. As Exo said, it wasn't just in this thread, it was an ongoing pattern with him. I'm saying this as a person who moderated this site for six years: most of the time members who aren't mods get their hackles up about these kind of things because they don't see the full picture and are unaware of all the history that lead up to a ban. Exo is a good guy and a good mod, he's not a person who is going to capriciously run around banning people without good reason.

I have no issue with people denouncing Ki, JWB, and my posts in this thread. I'm not going to apologize for my posts themselves (as I don't feel ashamed for making jokes in general), but I am sorry that I apparently offended so many people. I love to get under people's skin, but actively offending them isn't something I desire to do.

I feel more embarrassed that most of my posts (but not the very first couple or so) were made when I was too drunk to really show good judgement, since that's a symptom of a personal issue that I won't go into out of respect for not making this about me. But that's not the main reason I'd say what I said, as the 24-hour, "If it bleeds it leads" news cycle has made it hard for me connect with events that I hear about only through the media and have no personal connection with. Maybe that makes me callous, but it is what it is, I guess.

But I understand that others have every right to take offense at my comments, and given the circumstances I also understand how they might and have reacted, so I'm not going to take them to task for keeping this going days after the original incident stopped.

I am however going to ask the people complaining about Exo's actions to chill out. These discussions never do anything but cause escalating drama, and the mods were totally justified in moderating a thread of this nature, not to mention one which is in a discussion area of the site. Additionally, I recognize that incidents like this, whether or not I feel the same as others about my actual comments, do legitimately have a negative effect on the atmosphere and culture of the site, so I'm fine with the mods drawing a line in the sand in order to keep this site from becoming just a "playground" for a few individuals.
