The Twilight Zone and the TED Talk I have not yet seen. I have an archive of the entire TZ franchise and I'm slowly working my way through the series. This episode will certainly be bumped to first-in-line!
I can't believe I forgot to mention Blade Runner. I knew there more movies on the subject.

I am glad you like the recs. I feel like I am far reaching with these two movies. Short Circuit is more of a comedy, and doesn't go into too much depth about a.i. however is a really fun movie otherwise. Cherry 2000 only has an a.i. character in the beginning of the movie. It's the girlfriend of the main character, Sam Treadwell. He spends most of the movie looking for a new "chip" (which looks like a 2.5mm CD) because of a mishap that ruins the "chassis." It Melanie Griffith's character, E. Johnson, that raises the questions about having a relationship with an a.i. The Offspring (Star Trek TNG) is another favorite. It's more serious and goes a little more into depth about the subject.

WOW, so... the 80s happened...

Actually, Short Circuit (both the original and the sequel) were films I taped off HBO and practically wore out my VHS watching hundreds of times as a teen. I can recite every line from both movies. (File that under less-than-spectacular superpowers).

Cherry 2000 looks like a riot for a retro movie night. Nothing beats a post-apocalyptic 80s flick in my book.

WarGames is another AI favorite. Though I keep meaning to sit down and watch Colossus: The Forbin Project. Ghost in the Shell is another essential on my need-to-watch list, particularly for all the scenes mimicked frame-for-frame in the Matrix.

A quick Google search
populates a scrolling list of classic AI films.

Lots to see!

Interesting. Everything I've read about the developing world and technology suggests that they skipped the whole PC era and went right to mobile. And the access to information that comes with smartphone has been empowering to their citizens. Of course drastically impoverished nations are a whole other story but the impact of tech has been cnsiderable in the developing world.

I was gonna mention that earlier, but yeah, it's pretty ****ing amazing and mind-molesting.

When the technology involves something like limb regeneration through stem cell research or CRISPR genome editing suddenly the poor are back to their old status of being SOL. But the future ain't what it used to be.

Another good retro movie night would be Forbidden Planet. Instead of a conscience transferred into a computer, in Forbidden Planet, it's the sub-conscience that is materialized through Krell's great machine.

Obviously a crucially fantastic soundtrack but I've never seen the actual movie.

I've got that one covered. As an early electronic music fanatic the Forbidden Planet soundtrack is an absolute essential.

I also have the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio dramas on vinyl, if you count Eddie your ship board computer or Deep Thought to qualify as AI

Have you seen the animatrix or surrogates? the animatrix goes into more detail than the movie and surrogates is about humans transferring their conscious into robots.

There's also a Cowboy Bebop episode about a cypher prophet that was digitally created by a terminally ill patient who transferred his conscious into the web.
