You are basically saying that Bernie supporters didn't support Bernie until they saw that he had a possible chance of winning.

I'm a communist but I couldn't tell you the name of the communist parties candidate in the US this year because he/she didn't have a chance

That's not even remotely the same. It's not like he was running for some tiny party like the constitution party.

Yeah but he was an independent from Vermont prior to running

I just can't fault people for not knowing about him until mid primary I think you're being absurd

Nah. If you criticise Bernie supporters for being too lazy to figure out how to vote then you should also criticise poor blacks for not bothering to register.
