If memory serves, in Lenin's last days, Stalin had a pretty rude conversation with Lenin's wife (I don't remember exactly what he said, but it was interesting). Trotsky didn't have the gumption that Stalin did, which is why Trotsky lost in the power struggle. Say what you will about Stalin, but he was obviously an incredibly intelligent guy (not just booksmart, like many of the leading members of the appartchik at the time), and a masterful political manipulator.

Have you ever read Khrushchev Lied by Grover Furr? It's a book that purports to prove that many of the claims that Khrushchev levied against Stalin in his secret speech were actually false. I remember learning a fair amount of things after reading it. It's been a while though, so I can't really give you any concrete examples, but you might dig it, especially if you're in any way sympathetic to Stalin or his goals.
