If the neighborhood is white then the neighborhood is right.

You said it, not me, but we’re both racists. I’m just open about it.

The way that frogsdogsairplanes defines racism is actually what they teach in college.

But it's not the actual definition of racism.

MicShazam 05-21-2018 11:56 PM

I'm wondering to what degree students simply misunderstand the texts when they conflate "institutional racism" and "racism". I mean, I haven't read any of the books where this nonsense comes from, so what do I know?

Eh. I'm not going to change the way I use the word.

It’s from lectures and discussions

It’s to safeguard blacks from accusations of racism

Racism is based on a couple of things—historical, systemic oppression and power, Morgan explained. And as far as history goes, white people have never been persecuted for the colour of their skin—so there's no point comparing their experiences to those of black, brown, and Indigenous folks.

"It's slavery, colonialism, theft all kinds of violations on systemic proportions... versus feelings being hurt."

There's a difference, he noted, when white people who are in a position of power espouse a hatred of minorities than when it's done the other way around.

In April, BLMTO co-founder Yusra Khogali was highly criticized when a tweet of hers that said "Plz Allah give me strength not to cuss/kill these men and white folks out here today" was discovered.

But Morgan said even if all people of colour straight up said they hate white people, it wouldn't affect a white person's ability to get a job, an education, or increase the odds that they'd get carded or charged for a crime. "If all white people had that view [of black people], that would have a very dramatic life impact on the material reality of all those people."

The whole thing is bizarre. It would seem obvious that racism is prejudice/discrimination based on race and institutional racism is when that is happening institutionally. Why there has to be this conflation and redefining, I do not know.

Controlling language controls thought and therefore controls action. The battle over the words we use and how we define them is a cornerstone to politics.

That's a moment where you laugh because it's awkward then forget about it. Everyone clearly knows the context.

She handled it quite well, but it would have been better if she had told him to grow up a bit.

They saw that she was singing a song that Kendrick wrote. They saw that she was not using the word to insult anybody. Common sense doesn't have to go flying out the window just because it's the N word (OMG!)

People need to stop encouraging this madness.

I have a friend that would make people call him ****** and introduce himself as ******.

I don't know why though. I think he kind of wanted to take the power away from the word or something.

Is he black? Because if he’s white that’s hilarious.

The Batlord 05-22-2018 02:46 PM

Of course he's white.

Frownland 05-22-2018 02:47 PM

Good move. If I had to choose someone to take the power away from something, I'd pick a white guy.

Let's all get together at a central location, gets a ton of beers and popcorn, and watch 'Do the Right Thing' three times in a row.

Then I'll break out some killer ganja and we can all pontificate until the buzzes wear off.

You think the only end game for censorship and/or controlling language is justice? I'm so confused by this comment.

Manipulating language goes back way before post-modern definitions of racism.

Mostly it’s a tool to dehumanize or subhumanize another group of people.

You and I both use the word ‘capitalist’ in a pejorative way to fuel and justify hatred.

Seems kind of like a dick move to whom ever owns that house.
