Sorry, Janszoon! I don't know much about Detroit, but it turned up on the list of "Worst US cities" I looked at.

Well, it was thoroughly screwed over economically by big business, which lead to an increase in crime and massive decrease in population. But it's also historically been an amazing city for music and it's a cool place to visit.

And it's got some pretty bad civic management. I remember them putting in the "People Mover" which was elevated rail with little to no effort to build real economic development.

According to Richard Florida, Detroit's original sin was only having one industry and moving that to the edge of town.
