Surely this is good news and a reason to pat Biden on the back?
Biden announces cancellation of student debt for millions

Nice half measure you've got there, Joey.

Half is better than nothing, surely? I imagine it took a lot to get that one through. What does elph have to say? He's a student isn't he?

I mean that's less than half for most people. Still better than I was expecting he'd do, but he clearly could do better. I will give him partial credit but this isn't a second New Deal by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't know anything about it of course, but I would think that if you have say 30 or even 40 K in student debt, 10K off that is going to be a big help to you?

Sure, and as far as I know we've never gotten any student debt forgiveness at all before, but this is still the least he could do without obviously ignoring the issue and it does nothing to deal with student debt as a continuing problem. Next semester kids will be racking up student loans and the semester after that and the semester after that.

I'll be really surprised if he manages to get this loan forgiveness thing passed. My understanding is that a lot of Dems don't even support it. I still have some student loans I'm paying off, so it'd basically wipe them out. I wouldn't complain. All these people saying: "Well what about the people who didn't go to school, and what about the people who already paid off their loans?" - hate to break it to these folks, but every time tax codes change, someone is getting fvcked over.
If you're a big friggin bank who's failing because you doled out bad loans, the government will bail you out with taxpayer dollars, why shouldn't we get bailed out for once, for signing up for predatory loans (when we weren't even old enough to buy our own beer)? Again though, it's not a done deal, and I'm not getting my hopes up. Probably just more fodder to get people out to vote (D) in the midterms with no real chance of passing. Best case scenario would still involve Sinema and Manchin stonewalling it. And even getting votes from the other Dems would be a long shot. Last edited by SGR; 08-25-2022 at 01:29 PM. |
