But I don't so it doesn't matter. You said you can accept it doesn't really make a difference but at the same time your still trying to insist that somehow deep down it does make a difference. And I'm here to tell you that it doesn't. Your thoughts and actions are just as meaningless and devoid of impact as mine. I think we like to maintain the illusion of some sort of semblance of influence or impact cause accepting the contrary makes us feel helpless but maybe we are helpless after all.
Unless we are the first people that you've shared this information with,
then, yes, of course your statements make a difference.

I never quite understood the disconnect between all previous vaccine trust and Covid vaccine fear/denial. Like, we have had vaccines for like 200 years. We've been doing it for so long. The people who have been developing vaccines have 200 years worth of peer studied analysis and broke through with a new method that has, after months of roll outs, *gasp* been proven to be highly effective and safe.

Why is this still an issue?

Oh yeah!

Politics and dumb facebook moms. I forgot.

Like, my GF's father literally got a shingles vaccine but won't get the Covid one. It literally makes zero sense.

I think it's just a really unfortunate coincidence of antivax trends and corona, plus a corona vaccine being more sensational, and sensational things attract conspiracies because otherwise where's the fun in it. Also I've read some things about corona isolation and despair making people fall into a conspiracy rabbit hole, not sure how true that is but it seems plausible

Not so much because everyone's individual contribution is significant, but because making it a principle that everyone has to do this is the closest you can get to making sure things work out. I know I'm repeating myself, I feel like there's a satisfying analogy in here somewhere but I can't get at it
I agree it's the closest you can get to making sure things work out I just don't think it's worth the effort in relation to the returns you can expect to see.

That’s the point he keeps evading.
The way I look at is that if he’s somehow convinced himself that the vaccine risk is higher than the Covid risk, then, OK, it’s ridiculous, but that’s the reality of his own personal world.
...and if he really is serious about this position, then he better be inside the house, ordering groceries and all the things that go along with quarantine ... and if he isn’t doing those things most of us had to do during 2020, then he’s the troll that many of us think he is.

Lol. This is the first time that mRNA technology has been used at this scale. These are literally the first vaccines utilizing it. Less than a decade ago the technology was almost thrown out because early test results on humans by Moderna came back and showed toxic immune reactions. They've made great strides since then, but nobody really has any idea at this point if there are long-term effects or not. So no, it isn't the same as the previous 200 years. You can say whatever else you want, but it isn't trivial.

As far as my own behavior goes, I've gone over a year in north Texas (specifically the Dallas area) going out, doing business, practicing basic mask etiquette, etc. and haven't gotten sick. I never huddled in my house in 2020 or did anything particularly special other than just following the guidelines and taking a bit more care to wash my hands more often. I don't even know if I've had Covid-19 or not as of today because I never got tested.
