Hmm, I’m technically a new member but I lurked a lot in the past. Am I a new member or an old member? Schrodinger’s forum user?

You're a new member - and it remains to be seen whether or not you'll be added to the list of new members who didn't stick around.

Honestly that depends on whether you just checked out music content solely for recs or you silently watched our shit storms while eating popcorn. If you have opinions on Chula v. Frownland from years back then we have infected your mind in a Borg-like fashion that makes you one of us.

Mostly music, but I do remember several entertaining trainwrecks like RockGuitar101, Kobe Kai, The Virgin, that one guy who was obsessed with hair metal, not as much in the way of member beefs though, that kind of drama doesn't interest me as much as the wacky characters like those.

Understood! I'm certainly going to try my best, this place has been fun for me so far.

Sup OH.

jwb 01-17-2023 07:09 PM

I also refuse to believe OH has been inactive this long without being dead. So maybe I'm just being optimistic.

Synthgirl 01-17-2023 07:13 PM

Hmm... I have had the strange urge to call albums "unassailable" lately. Maybe you're onto something.

Omg you remember The Virgin? That was maybe my first dumb MB ****fest. I don't even remember whatever the **** they were on about but I know they were the enemy to be met with cutlass and grapeshot. I feel like that was Howard the Duck's crusade though.

The Batlord 01-17-2023 07:34 PM

Oh wait I think they were a highly annoying person whose only gimmick was to inject that they were gay into every single post. Now I'd just pass over that **** and ignore them as a newly out annoying person who needed everyone to know but in the context of pre-gamergate it needed needling for some reason.

Synthgirl 01-17-2023 07:39 PM

I mostly just remember them posting stuff like saying in the classical forum that their favorite classical composer was Mariah Carey.

Perhaps I unfairly lumped them in with the others, just a weird member that stuck in my mind.

jwb 01-17-2023 07:39 PM

It was in the dark ages when ***got was still an acceptable casual insult. The good old days as I call them.

Synthgirl 01-17-2023 07:43 PM

Oh yeah, another member whose posts I always loved was Franco Pepe Kalle. I hope he's doing well.

jwb 01-17-2023 07:58 PM

**** i remember that guy. I'm honestly curious now... how does anyone have the stamina to lurk for years without ever wanting to post?

A lot of reasons honestly, early on (2007-2010) I was more just intimidated by some posters here as I was generally quite shy back then.

And after that I mostly just read it to get cool music recs and happened to go through a couple funny and memorable threads every so often. I've been using the internet for over 20 years and it's really only been in the last five or so that I've posted anywhere at all.

Edit: I'm overjoyed that I have managed to derail this thread from talking about that loser Tate, hahaha.

Yeah I'm also curious about that mentality. Not in a judgy way but I just don't understand it. I mean early in the 00s I'd be kind of reticent about posting but I still just wanted to get in there. Now I'm keen to just manspread in any community I have any interest in.

SGR 01-17-2023 08:39 PM

The internet was the wild west in the late 90s/early '00s. It's become both better and worse since then.

I dunno what to tell you, I've always just been a bit of a shy person when communicating over text with strangers. I had very low self esteem when I was younger and strayed away from sharing my opinions. I'm not antisocial, I'm just generally pretty reserved, even IRL.

I also grew up in the "tits or GTFO" era of the internet and that did a pretty large amount of psychic damage.

I'm working on myself, meeting my partner over the past year has helped a lot with my self confidence.

I mean that's even earlier than that time period. Like what you're talking about was AOL instant messenger when you could just harass random people on AIM in a way that people who came to the internet via Facebook couldn't even grasp. Back when my main interaction with the internet was fan sites for whatever anime I was into at the time.

In some ways though, you'd think communicating over text anonymously with strangers would allow you to be yourself more, wouldn't you? Besides the whole "tits or GTFO" thing which we'd never countenance around here.

I don't know, I didn't view it as just that, I'm also thinking about how web design as a whole has become much more sanitized and uniform - every successful website copying everyone else - the rise of search algorithms propping up sites based on ad revenue, bla bla bla. I'm sure you remember when the design of different websites seemed to be completely unique - you'd have flashing graphics in weird places, ugly color contrasts, hyperlinks to random crap everywhere. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but the internet back then felt more unique, DIY and genuine.

Well the best thing I can tell you as someone who dreads social interaction IRL and always assumes that eventually "They" will find out what a piece of **** you are and cast you out, and I include MB in that, but here I am over a decade later cause as long as you don't talk about how much you want to **** children then people will tolerate you.

Honestly not sure which mix I've heard. I'm way more of a The Idiot kind of gal.

jwb 01-17-2023 09:12 PM

Who were the people you were scared of in the years 2007-2010? I can't help but think these people shaped your entire MB trajectory, and may continue to shape it still.

There's the original mix, the Bowie mix, and the Iggy mix which Iggy mixed himself in the 90s by just turning all the knobs up to 11. The latter is the mix we're waiting to kill you if you don't prefer.

The indie hipsters, the "Real Emo" purists, it just felt like there were more elitists in general back then. I was just coming out of my high school scene kid phase and I was here more for musical education rather than to have my tastes scrutinized.

I will report back with my findings.

The Batlord 01-17-2023 09:32 PM

Yeah the indie dweebs are gone and it's much more about your idiosyncratic music taste even if there isn't a ****load of people here to talk about how much you all like the Arctic Monkeys or whatever.

Yiz haven't found me out yet.
:shycouch:

Nah, seriously: the best way to approach this forum is give as good as you get. Find other people's weaknesses and use them against them to gain godlike powers that allow you to... ah. I've... said too much. Oh! What's that over there?
