It's like i'm speaking to a broken record. I've posted times where i've seen you being disrespectful, and I can't be the only person who has seen it. You may think it's a joke, but a lot of people can't see that you're joking. Especially when you use a word like "retard", do you have any idea how offensive that word can be? It's not a word that should just be used lightly, it does hurt. Internet or not, I don't think it's an acceptable form of speech.

Paedantic Basterd 05-10-2012 11:53 AM

I always thought that the rule about personal insults should take context into account, and shouldn't be acted upon unless the receiving party has reported it as over the line.

I think a lot of people here can handle being called an idiot, and frankly, could use it from time to time. I'm not advocating behaving like internet savages, but I think we can take care of ourselves, and more, I think that the most hurtful comments often contain no namecalling at all. Hence context.

Well I just went back searching through posts and I've only used the word retard once in the last 4 years, and it wasn't directed at anyone either.
In fact you'll find it here...

http://www.musicbanter.com/1154585-post149.html

I could go back further than the beginning of 2009 to see if I've used it more but I don't really see the point.

anything else?

I guess not. Directed or not, it may just be a personal issue, but it's a sore spot, especially when the word is used loosely.

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-10-2012 12:06 PM

Now you're just looking for things to complain about that would probably apply to 90% of the members here if you wanted it to.

I'm done here now.

There's no reason all the other mods should have to follow a guideline, yet he doesn't have to. For some reason, people have just allowed him to be privileged around here, and quite frankly, it's annoying that people like you and some others around here seem that sucking his dick will put you on his good side.

It's annoying as hell people like you coming in here and crying like a little bitch over some pixels. Get a grip of your fucking life Milano.

I think Urban can defend himself and doesn't need you to act butthurt towards any criticism of his actions.

Personally, I love Urban and think he's a great asset to a site and community which owes him a lot. Still, I agree with Ki that mods shouldn't troll newbs and, as I was the one to complain about Conan's avatar, of course I think Urban's avatar should be within the limits as well. I agree that there should be some flexibility regarding rules, but I feel mods should put forth a good example and when exercising his "right" to troll, he should do it towards people who know him rather than newbs.

This is generally speaking and completely disregarding context, though. I'll admit that if a newb was sufficiently douchy, I would care less about mods trolling him or her.

You know what Tore, you're right. I'm so devastated someone has complained about Urban, I literally JUST had time to post that gif. I've been so busy sucking his dick, you know?

I don't see how that's very "structured" in terms of newcomers.

He's on a musicforum!!! With an avatar a little too wide. He's hardly smoking crack infront young impressionable children. Jesus christ. You need to get your prioritys right man.

I think Ki's first post sort of had a point, honestly. Urban can be one of those guys where I sometimes think "That was...a little far".

But honestly, this little pissing match is just embarassing on both sides.

Ki - You're done here now too? Great. Don't let the door hit you on the way out because you basically tried to lead an attack on someone and found out nobody had your corner. Unless you truly are unbelievably thin skinned, there's no way you don't realise that Urban gets leeway and frankly, so does everyone else who isn't a total nooblet. Hell, I *KNOW* I've been given leeway in things before now and I'm thankful for it.

Urban - Why are you so desperate to prove yourself here? You're coming off a little weird about this whole affair, a little touchy, if anything.

Now with that said, let us spend the obligatory 2 seconds pretending we give a **** about Ki proclaiming his departure.

This. So many people get bent out of shape when they first show up. Do some thread browsing and you'll see how the regulars are a community here...the jayshreddz thing proved that. The rules are there so ass holes that first show up don't make a mess of things...then once we know you are here to contribute and/or just hang out we let things slide.

Ki is a great guy and a great asset to the site, but I'm surprised that he has attacked Urban like so in this thread. @Ki ever since I've been here, the rules of the site have been guidelines and nothing more and the mods have controlled the site in a sensible way. Urban has always been the dominant mod if you like, the bad cop as opposed to the good cops portrayed by the other mods. I've seen him lay into people, most of them have been brats or people that have just gone too far. At times he says stuff, that if you're not British could be deemed offensive, so there is a slight cultural issue there in interpreting his humour and some of the stuff he says. Personally I can't imagine MB without him, because who else is going to slap down the trolls and morons on here.

right-track 05-10-2012 01:26 PM

first of all,

http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/...wt4ro8_400.gif

SECONDLY, as someone who doesn't "suck Urban's dick" as you have previously so eloquently said, I've never had an issue with him where I felt I had to complain to other mods about it, and he's said somethings that are assy, but you don't see me whining about it. We may not be friendly but to his credit, what he says is almost always on point. Like he said, he was saying stuff the shoutbox was saying, or at least thinking.

Lastly, you're a fucking hypocrite. As soon as I criticise you for the loathsome lovey dovey ****, you and your creepy ass girlfriend get all antagonistic to me. Funny, you can whine about someone else, but when someone else doesn't like the shit you post, they should just deal with it. No one else is allowed to speak their minds, only you? You are not immune to criticism. And as for "me being jealous"? Gurl I lost my virginity 7 years ago, I got over it and didn't have to parade it all around the internet for everyone to see. Sit the fuck down.

Phantom Limb 05-10-2012 03:28 PM

Freebase Dali 05-10-2012 03:42 PM

The point some people seem to be missing is that we don't use black and white moderation.
If we stuck strictly to the rules, a lot of this community would have been banned long ago, and this place would be the North Korea of the internet.
Most of the people here are adults and have been here long enough to know where the line is. We trust most of you guys to be able to police yourselves and not need a moderator to tell you when enough is enough. On the rare occasion we do, that's when we step in.

So yea, we let a lot of stuff slide. And we also hold ourselves to the same standards we hold the community to, so we don't expect to be called out when we enjoy the same leniency we afford our members.
We do have the responsibility of setting an example for the rest of the forum, and we have not failed in that regard. If we expected the community to rigidly follow the written rules at all times or expect punishment otherwise, then we would do so as well. But since that's not realistic and would be the wrong way to run this place, we address PROBLEMS. And, to my knowledge, the last moderator to ever present a problem got kicked out of the team and banned.

I don't think we'd have to put Urban's worth and actions on trial here to know what the overwhelming consensus would be, and it has nothing to do with sucking up.

TockTockTock 05-10-2012 03:46 PM

Uhm... Going to go ahead and deviate away from the current subject and say something NICE about a few people.

anticipation: can be kind of an asshole at times, but I respect the hell out of his opinions anyways. He certainly has a very interesting outlook on things and can be a great guy to talk to.

Sneer/Stu: I really wish he would post more... He's one of my favorite people here.

Anteater

Kind words Brennan. And it's good to know I'm not a complete ****, despite myself.

There's a few people here I'd like to mention, but just 2 for now.

Big3. Above all else, he's a gentleman. Although it sometimes requires the services of Bletchley Park to decipher a great deal of his posts, they are always worth the read.
Misunderstood, is the word best to describe Big3's time here on MB. Always interesting, never dull!
Intelligent beyond doubt, yet insulted by those less so has par for the course on these boards for as long as I can remember.
One of the very few members here I'd like to imagine I could count as a friend in real life.
What strikes me about the Big3 is his obvious sincerity. I've no doubt he's exactly the same on here as he is at home. The real deal.

Urban gets a mention too seeing as he's been the focus recently of some negative comments.
Love him or hate him...you can't ignore him.
I never really got to know Urban as much as some here may think. Owed mostly to the fact that I'm quite a private person and aloof at the best of times, but most likely down to the fact that I've never really felt the need to get to know him better than I think I already do.
Although I've always known enough about him to know that there's more to Urban than meets the eye. Beneath the abrasive surface of UrbanHatemonger lies the truth about this person. And it's all good.
I think if people knew the real Urban they'd think twice about attacking him.
I sometimes wonder if the attacks on him are fuelled by an attempt at gaining respect or some kind of forum credibility?
Forget it...cos you'll always come off looking like a knobhead.
Urban's a mod on MusicBanter for a very good reason. Urban is MusicBanter.
I've lost count of the times he's breathed life into this place with a well timed thread.
Ask yourself, when was the lasttime you did that?

i'll start with Lisnaholic

who gives a fuck about any of the obscure folk he listens to and wants to promote?

Paedantic Basterd 05-11-2012 08:40 AM

Whether or not that was sarcastic in nature:

Lisna's a superb poster, one of the kindest people here, and our subforums would be dead were it not for the few, rare people making an effort to fill them with content. What can you expect if only one person is contributing content to a forum?

The last thread I saw from this person was about Ernest Ranglin. A great musician anyone interested in either jazz guitar or reggae should check out.

The last thread I remember from you was complaining about your co-worker and talking about your ding-dong.

Which one seems like a more substantial contributor to a site called Music banter?

Janszoon 05-11-2012 09:32 AM

I assume Howard was just joking. Lisnaholic is the ideal MB poster: Super nice, mature, intelligent, and posts insightfully about music instead of getting caught up in pettiness like the last few pages of this thread. Seriously, we should all aspire to be more like him.
