01 Blink 182 - Take Off Your Pants And Jacket

OMG OMG OMG this rules , If you don`t like this then you suck. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd , Miles Davis , they all wish they could make an album this good. The Who totally ripped off the idea for Tommy by listening to 'The Rock Show' and if you don`t think this is true then you can suck my ****.All of you who say Blink 182 are crap can kiss my ass because you have no taste.

Favourite Songs - All of them , in fact the songs on this album make my entire list redundant. I`m going to burn my entire CD collection & only listen to this for the rest of my life.

40. Roxy Music - Roxy Music (1972)

I remember John Peel once saying 'The early 1970s were kinda boring , except for Roxy Music'.And he had a point. There were no overlong wanky solos here or your boring blues influenced c0ck rock that a million & one bands were churning out at the time. The great thing about Roxy Music was that they were fresh , they were totally new & different & beyond classification because threw all their influences together & created a sound that nobody then or since has sounded anything like .But above all they were FUN.The great thing about this album is the tension between Brian Eno pulling one way & Bryan Ferry pulling his way, It really makes the album. You have Ferry trying to pull the band into his smooth lounge lizard style one way & Eno with all his weirdy synthisizer effects pulling in the opposite way. Of course it would never last & Eno finally upped & left to do his own thing (Joined by everybody in Roxy Music except Ferry ironically enough). They only ever recorded 2 albums with Eno (This one & For Your Pleasure)and they made one good record without him (Stranded)But after that Roxy Music slid down the slippery slope to Ferry`s middle of the road soft rock hell. Still at least they had this album.

39. PJ Harvey - Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea (2000)

I love this album , probably because it was the best thing she`d done in ages. I liked her first couple of albums, but it was probably her album of demos for the Rid Of Me that really got me hooked. But then she seemed to slump & her next couple of albums were a huge disapointment.And then just as i`m thinking she`s on her way out , she comes out with this little beauty & restores my faith in her. There`s an energy about this album that she had with her first couple but the songs & the production are far better. The first 2 songs on the album just blew me away and the rest of them kept me interested right until the end. Something I can`t say of the 2 albums that preceeded this one. She won the Mercury music prize for this one. In reality not one of the other nominations could touch this.

38. The Fall - Live At The Witch Trials (1979)

Ah-ha , there was always going to be an album by the Fall on this list , the question was always going to be which one. I decided to go for the one that started it all.I will put my cards on the table right now & say that Mark E Smith is a real hero of mine. In an industry full of hangers on , bullsh*tters , and talentless idiots who sell music with their looks & expensive videos on MTV, Mark E Smith is a breath of fresh air.He reminds me of the miserable old bloke you see in the pub permenently pissed & mouthing off about anything & everything.He does what he wants , says what he wants , he once fired his own wife from the band , another time he decided he would do a gig by himself & locked his entire band in the dressing room for 2 hours while he performed.The Falls music itself changes like the weather. On this album you have Mark snarling & drawling his vocals over your typical lo fi punk rock but with an electric piano added to give the music a totally different dimension. Sometimes you wonder if you`re listening to a rock album or a gameshow theme, totally weird. A million or so albums down the line Mark is still putting out music and still hiring & firing members like they`re going out of fashion , their last album was still just as aggressive & as uncompromising as this was 25 years ago. God bless the old bugger.

37. Gorkys Zygotic Mynci - Barafundle (1997)

So around 8 or 9 years ago i`m sitting at home at around 3am with the TV on in the background wondering if I should go to bed , then all of a sudden I hear this great song. It`s melodic , it`s quirky , it`s fun & I can`t understand a bloody word the lead singer is saying. I keep watching & i`m told the song is called If Fingers Were Xylophones by the Welsh band Gorkys Zygotic Mynci and that their Bwyd Time album as well as the single was available. So far so good. I look for it , and look , and look and look.....And nothing. In fact I STILL don`t own that album , but at least I now have the song.Then a couple of years later I read they have signed to a major lable and had an album out I rushed to get it......and it was wonderful. I still couldn`t understand a word of it , but half the songs were in welsh anyway.But that didn`t matter. This is the perfect summer record. Laid back , gentle & soothing folk music done with a modern twist . They may have had their ups & downs after this (Their next album Gorkys 5 was terrible , so terrible in fact the record company dropped them) but they are always one band I rush out to buy when they have something new out.

36. The Sleepy Jackson - Lovers (2003)

My favourite album from 2003 and it came from out of nowhere. I`d bought their mini album the previous year & didn`t really think much of it, In fact I only bought this album because I`d heard the first single 'Good Dancers' off it and was impressed with it , plus I could get it for £2. When I listened to it I was awestruck at what I was hearing. This wasn`t the lackluster indie band i`d heard the previous year. This was a guy spreading his songwriting wings incorperating rock , country , pop & electronica. The album opener Good Dancers is almost operatic with lashings of lush strings & female harmonies which gives way to the driving guitar rock of the next song Vampire Racecourse , with Luke Steele virtually spitting out the lyrics , then there`s the laid back country of Rain Falls For The Wind.And quite honestly you never know what you`re going to get next. I only hope he can get it all together for another album , Luke Steele`s drinking has been compared to Bon Scott proportions.

35. Led Zeppelin - Presence (1976)

I`ve no idea why this album has such a bad rap. I can understand why it isn`t liked as much as say the first 4 albums or Physical Graffiti , it`s not your typical bombastic macho posturing that Led Zeppelin became famous & if you are a Led Zep fan for that reason then this probably isn`t the best Led Zep album. But even with my macho pusturing Led Zep hat on i`d still say that In Thru The Out Door & Houses Of The Holy are much worse than this album.So Plant`s vocals are not technically brilliant on this album , who the hell cares , no other Led Zeppelin album had this much feeling in it.
Anyway I love this album because it doesn`t have all that. This is a wounded Led Zep, at their most vunerable , a band that were not even sure if there would be a band for much longer & I think it`s compelling listening. This is probably the most personal album they made & i`d much rather hear songs like that than songs about Valhalla or all that mystical bollocks.This album contains the best song Plant & Page ever wrote in Tea For One , I don`t care what anyone says this runs rings around Stairway & is a much more mature & poignant , written about Plant`s lonliness on tour due to Page`s heroin addiction & Bonzo partying & Jones keeping himself to himself. Almost 10 mins long but I never get bored of hearing it. And just in case you are in any doubt , there`s Achilles Last Stand just to prove that there`s life in the old dog yet and a great cover of Otis Reddings Nobodies Fault But Mine . Not the best Led Zeppelin album , but still my favourite.

34. UNKLE - Psyence Fiction (1998)

Usually you stick a bunch of people together & do a load of collaberations it comes out as one big mess. This album shouldn`t work , but it does. On this album you have (Deep breath) The Beastie Boys , Badly Drawn Boy ,Kool G Rap , Richard Ashcroft ,Alice Temple , Jason Newstead & Thom Yorke. And thats not counting the the people that didn`t get as far as appearing on the album (Ian Brown, Bobby Gillespie & Josh Homme). But the true talent behind this album is DJ Shadow. The songs themselves does not just have appearences by other artists , they sound like those artists. The Drums Of Death sounds like a Beastie Boys song , Lonely Souls sounds like a Verve song , Rabbit In Your Headlights sounds like a Radiohead song , but it`s a testament to DJ Shadows talent that he puts all these peices together & makes an album that flows together & despite all the different genres on show it all flows along nicely & nothing seems out of place, You can have the Beastie Boys doing a full on rap alongside a Thom Yorke piano driven ballad, and it works. The highlight of the album is Rabbit In Your Headlights with Thom Yorke , the best song on the album by a mile & probably the best Radiohead song there never was. James Lavelle attempted another UNKLE album a few years later , it had everything this album had with one exception. DJ Shadow wasn`t involved. It was awful.

33. XTC - English Settlement (1982)

One of the things that has surprised me is when talking to some of my American friends about music just how many of them like this band.They`ve never been big over there as far as I know yet they seem to have a lot more popularity over there at the moment than they do here. XTC in my opinion were probably the best band of the post punk era , mixing intelligent lyrics with wonderful catchy hooks. I guess you`d call it punk pop now , but I think musically they are well above that level. This album was a kind of transitional album moving away from that sound & focusing more on an almost folkish sound. There`s a lot of acoustic guitar on this album but it`s done with rock style bass & drums so there`s still plenty of moments to nod your head to. This album contains one of my favourite songs ever in Senses Working Overtime , one of my earliest musical memories as a child , again it`s an acoustic song but with pumping bass & drums almost giving in an anthemic quality to it.With all the bands from the 1980s seemingly getting a re-evaluation influencing todays bands I really hope someone stands up & gives this lot some much deserved credit.
