Burial

There were a couple of posts about these but no thread so here goes. Hailing from London, Burial's identity is not known. Why the annonimity I do not know. When I first heard the album UNTRUE I was not too impressed. most of the songs have the same beats and structure but the more I listened the more I loved it. The album just has this lazy trippy vibe with a light dubstep. Fans of Massive Attack and Portishead would dig them. Perfect for smoking (if that's your bag!)

Me no likey...

jackhammer 01-21-2008 12:44 PM

Give them another chance and listen to the album as a whole piece. I enjoyed it so much more. It gets better with every listen, it's a very subtle album.

Rainard Jalen 01-21-2008 01:06 PM

yeah, this is a good album. it's not as good as the critics made out, but it has its place and was a worthy entry from 2007. it's great to drive to, on a very cold, gloomy, grim, rainy afternoon...

Ornette 01-22-2008 06:33 PM

Everything Burial does is incredible. How one man can have such an ear for sculpting perfect little songs out of the kind of ridiculous stuff he samples is completely unknown to me.

Rainard Jalen 01-23-2008 01:36 AM

Even then, I think a lot of dubstep by other artists is tonnes better.

Friday 01-25-2008 04:42 AM

I think he's fantastic. His music seems like a more 'fitting' definition of dubstep than people such as Skream (not to knock Skream at all.)

enemyat_thesix 01-25-2008 03:51 PM

While I did enjoy his debut, Untrue bored me. It sounds exactly like Burial.

The fact that Untrue is the top album of 2007 on Metacritic doesn't help, either.

jackhammer 01-25-2008 04:08 PM

I would'nt say it was the best album of 2007 by far and I rarely take any notice of best of lists-only on here are they worthy! Musically it is not spectacular. I just love the ambience of the whole album.

enemyat_thesix 01-25-2008 04:14 PM

can't be ambient with percussions ^_^

but I get what you're saying. you like the ambiance of the album

jackhammer 01-25-2008 04:22 PM

Both words mean virtually the same thing, and if it is pertaining to a musical enviroment AMBIENT is widely used and has better connatations, whereas AMBIANCE ascribes more to a physical enviroment.

GravitySlips 01-29-2008 07:54 AM

the selftitled album ****ing rules!

now I need to hear Untrue.

jackhammer 01-29-2008 05:09 PM

Still need to hear it Gravity?

GravitySlips 01-29-2008 05:24 PM

yeah man...having problems with soulseek just now, which is annoying me. keeps disconnecting for some reason.

GravitySlips 02-02-2008 06:39 PM

thank you very much for that Burial album JH, appreciate it man. I've given it a couple of listens and I'm enjoying it a lot.

Molecules 02-03-2008 06:06 AM

i only jumped on a few months ago and got Untrue...
there was a rare interview on Blackdown's blogspot where Burial talks about his love of UK garage and jungle, there are the echoes of nightclub garage dubs on Unture I think, in the vocals. It's amazing music really, you have to be in sponge-mode to sit and soak it up properly though. Truly an innovator of the digital boards..alot of dubstep influence but it's not for dancing, obviously. Bleak is Best :D

enemyat_thesix 02-04-2008 06:41 PM

people go crazy for Burial, when really, he is subpar when compared to other dubstep producers.

check out Distance's My Demons for a superior dubstep album

jackhammer 02-04-2008 07:09 PM

They are making different music. Both are excellent. You should just state that we should check out cerain artist etc. Burial is a lot more subversive than Distance. I like both BTW.

Molecules 02-05-2008 04:26 AM

anyone heard Pinch's album? think it's called 'underwater dancehall' or something?

Seraphina 02-22-2008 07:40 PM

Not bad. I checked out Untrue on mp3sparks.com and it sounds like something I could definitely get into, at least for good background music.

I kind of agree with both of you here (although I like Untrue a lot better than Burial s/t).
My Demons is an amazing album. Still, when I want to hear Untrue there is no substitute. I'm also liking Repercussions a lot lately but I don't think it beats MD.

GravitySlips 06-21-2009 08:32 PM

I'm a pretty big fan of dubstep but Burial is by far my favourite... his recent collab with Four Tet is unbelievably good.

^ seriously, one of the best things i've heard in a while. absolutely fu'cking love this.

(Copied from Amazon):

2008 installment in the DJ-Kicks series comes from the hugely acclaimed, underground dubstep producer Burial. The South London producer is notoriously shy of press and public performances yet his last two albums on Kode 9's Hyperdub label have established him as one of the global leaders in this exploding scene on word-of-mouth alone. The 2008 DJ Kicks from Four Tet, Henrik Schwarz, Booka Shade and Hot Chip have all pushed new limits in eclecticism, making linear genre-specific DJ mixes a thing of past... so who knows where Burial will take it next.

Was supposed to come out Nov, but now it says Jan 6th. ...Can't come soon enough. Will be buying this for sure. :)

sidewinder 11-28-2009 10:46 PM

The Flying Lotus DJ Kicks is also supposed to be out January 5th (originally scheduled October 27, 2009). Neither the 5th or the 6th correspond with typical release days though. Both of these have been pushed back once or twice, who knows anymore, but I'm curious to hear both.

I have a couple of DJ Kicks comps and they are very hit or miss for me but I am looking for links to the series if anyone has any. Thievery Corporations is by far my favourite thus far.

Dieselboy 11-30-2009 06:07 PM

I talked about the 5 Years of Hyperdub CD in the Albums You've Been Digging II thread, and mentioned Burial's previously unreleased track as one of the reason's it was so good. God I hope he's comes out with a new album soon...I love this stuff.

A commenter on youtube said, "This is what loneliness and longing sounds like. I feel love in the pit of my stomach when I hear Burial's tracks." And I can't think of any better way to describe this song. :(

CanwllCorfe 11-30-2009 07:43 PM

Yeah that's a great track! I reviewed it in my journal thing awhile back

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...c-reviews.html

I've been wanting to do more reviews but only have the time to do small replies. Hopefully ONE day I'll be able to. Probably when college is over in the next couple of weeks

Dieselboy 11-30-2009 07:56 PM

Ah whoops, didn't realize someone had already linked it. Also, didn't know you had a journal or I'd have checked it out...gonna look through it now. :P

cornandbeans 12-02-2009 02:54 AM

Picked up Untrue last year and was really captivated. The way I see it, Burial is more headphone music and dubstep like distance/skream/caspa etc is better suited for the clubs. The collaborations between Four Tet and him are mind blowing!

Anyone know of any artists doing something similar?

SATCHMO 12-02-2009 03:12 AM

How did I miss this guy and this thread? I took one listen to the youtube track in the OP and had to go snag the album.

Heard this song King Midas Sound - Meltdown on a dubstep compilation. Sounds sorta similar I think.
They have an album coming out Dec 8th it says on Amazon...lookin forward to checking it out. :)

SATCHMO 12-02-2009 05:54 PM

^^^ Wow, I really like that.

Those moans in the background really grab me. Cool sounding stuff! I sort of prefer Burial's style of minimal vocal use however.

Yeah true, I know what you mean. The samples he uses are so short and sometimes they're even unintelligable, but at the same time they say SO much...just through the emotion that they convey...its amazing really.

Boxcutter sounds kinda similar to me..

^^^^^^I checked out that album and I really like it. I think it's next on my list.

cornandbeans 12-04-2009 08:51 PM

I ended up taking a four hour nap after listening to both his albums today. I think depending on the weather and your mood his music can have a really profound effect.

I know exactly what you mean. His music is amazing any time you listen to it really, but if you pop in Untrue when its raining then it just becomes that much better. If its dark outside as well, then prepare to have your mind blown pretty much. 0_0

Exactly! I'm just going off of your name, but are you a fan of drum and bass by any chance?
