Dubstep Label Sampler: DMZ
(link is above tracklisting)

DMZ is a label set up in 2004 run by producer/DJs Coki, Mala and Loefah (as well as MC Sgt. Pokes) out of Brixton, South London. DMZ is also inarguably the most influential dubstep club night and part of the bedrock of the scene's origins.

Coki and Mala are dubstep's most famous producers under their pseudonym Digital Mystikz, the DMZ label being a platform for their music as a duo, as solo artists or for longtime collaborator Loefah.
They were present at the dubstep's beginnings in 2003 with producers such as Skream and Benga on the Tempa label, having a huge impact on it's direction with their incorporation of dub/reggae soundsystem aesthetics and values.

DMZ's speaker set-up has a fierce reputation. Before the England smoking ban, the sight of glowing spliffs protruding from the raised hoods of skanking bass-junkies was a common sight; and many of dubstep's most recognizable names made the pilgrimage here throughout the first half of the Noughties to experience the infamous sound and 'meditate on bass weight'.

Every budding 'scene' brings with it it's collection of pretentious arseholes and manifesto-writers and from what I've heard DMZ had it's share.
But as the initial fervor of lost wanderers in virgin musical territory has diluted into hundreds of producers and releases every month, the DMZ dubs still take me back to the pure dread I cut my teeth on, sitting pressed to the wall of my flatmates room as he put the sub-woofer through it's paces practicing for the next set.
Their stuff is foreboding and deep in a way very few have imitated successfully... So here's the best of Digital Mystikz and the rest of the DMZ label for MB to experience! 12'' plates from the last 5 years

1. Intro
2. I Wait - Digital Mystikz
3. Spongebob - Coki
4. Haunted - Digital Mystikz
5. Triple Six - Coki
6. Twisup - Digital Mystikz & Loefah
7. Hunter - Mala
8. Anti War Dub - Digital Mystikz
9. Horror Show - Loefah
10. Learn - Mala
11. Mood Dub - Coki
12. Goat Stare - Loefah
13. Ancient Memories - Digital Mystikz

A number of iconic DMZ tracks made it onto the Dubstep Allstars Vol.2 CD showcase on Tempa, which was largely responsible for popularizing the genre, and elsewhere, but here you will find just tracks from their 12'' back catalogue I have accumulated over the last couple of years.
Except for the odd mid-bass one to break up the mood this is a sub-fest so, as always, make sure you can amp it up to hear everything.

this caught my attention, the animation reminds me of that guy that did Salad Fingers...

I doubt they have them in the US so FYI Space Raiders are an ultra cheap snack, they cost 10p when I was a kid which I guess back then would have been twenty cents?

i think i will do a Tectonic label sampler next, depending on how bored i be

jackhammer 03-19-2009 08:34 AM

Liked the earlier comp mate. Downloading the DMZ now :)

Molecules 03-19-2009 09:04 AM

ahh coolcool :D

In further dubstep news, Snoop Dogg is a fan and has vocaled Chase & Status' 'Eastern Jam'. This is not a joke. I actually think it's pretty damn good

joyboyo53 03-25-2009 06:45 PM

i really like the way the chorus was incorporated, but ive grown tired of snoops rap style unfortunately :(. expirimentally speaking, i think that the two genres do sound very good together and would love to hear more of something else similar to this. i really think rap has gone stale and i think it could really use the exploration into more electro-heavy music, since they share a similar musical sound.

Piss Me Off 03-26-2009 07:03 AM

Bit late with that mix but i'm downloading now. Chase and Status played at my uni, i was mashed and it was brilliant, every drum n' bass thing i've been to has been brilliant and i really need to start listening to it at home..

Exiled Hybrid 03-30-2009 07:24 PM

nice

GravitySlips 04-11-2009 09:22 PM

Boxcutter has a new record, anyone heard it?

Meph1986 08-07-2009 11:48 PM

Anyone have more info on DatsiK? I heard several tracks of his and I'm really liking him.

Here's a collaboration with Excision:

Engine 08-08-2009 05:33 PM

Damn ^that's good!
Haven't heard him before.

SenneC 11-18-2009 09:18 AM

Roots manuva!

Remedy 11-18-2009 12:44 PM

heavy

IWP 12-31-2009 12:40 PM

Rusko is the **** when it comes to dubstep!

primo 01-03-2010 11:17 PM

Yeh I like Rusko.. Not sure if anybody's mentioned 'Mistabishi', but their sort of drum n bass with a dubstep edge!

primo 01-03-2010 11:19 PM

Also is it just me who can only listen to dubstep for so long before they get a headache? I mean I really like dubstep, but I can only stand especially the heavier, less melodic stuff for so long at a time.

IWP 01-05-2010 09:51 PM

I dunno, but to me, dubstep sounds alot better when I'm either high or drunk off my ass.

Schizotypic 01-14-2010 12:19 PM

Throw me the craziest, most original...

Dubstep in the world.

This was pretty cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwmUO...eature=related
But don't limit your suggestions, anything that is both dubstep and good- I wanna hear them. Thank you!

sidewinder 01-14-2010 12:25 PM

Perhaps the Dubstep thread would be helpful? http://www.musicbanter.com/electroni...3-dubstep.html

Amazing artist though.

Agreed. Roots Manuva has always had some dub influences peppering his music but he certainly isn't dubstep.

This is still probably my favourite Dubstep track (even though I cannot find a good vid):

With this a close second. I think I have probably posted these before but hey!

Piss Me Off 01-16-2010 02:14 PM

Still an enduring favourite for me out of the small amount of stuff i've heard

Idioteque 03-21-2010 03:57 PM

Do you like Dubstep?

I realised that a lot of people where I'm from hate Dubstep... I'm a fan though! So I'm looking for some new Dubstep tracks to listen to.

CosmicPrimitive 03-21-2010 04:11 PM

I don't listen to much dubstep, though I have heard some. The ideas involved in its production have influenced my own music a bit.

Chubbosaurus 03-31-2010 12:48 PM

I LOVE dubstep. I'm getting an epic tattoo on me that's going to be all about the dub.

I'm going to a show on Friday actually that has Subvert, Excision and Datsik - man, am I ever STOKED. And for any other fans of dubstep, drum n bass, or any other genre like that, I suggest you check out Shambhala this year. It was by far the best experience of my life (: I want everyone who loves this music as much as I do to experience it.

jps 04-05-2010 12:04 PM

I've noticed (while either playing or being in the audience) that dubstep is a party pooper in any "generic" club. You might have couple heads in the crowd who enjoy it but better leave it to the specific nights or clubs

IWP 04-20-2010 01:27 PM

I dunno about dubstep, I'm not exactly the biggest fan of it, but I do like it in small doses. It's inmensly popular in the rave scene here in Philly along with jump up drum & bass. Rusko is probably my favorite artist from this genre, C0ckney Thug and Jahova are both good ass songs. I dunno, I see this music as more like a "let's chill out and smoke up" kind more than music to dance to at raves.

AL42228 04-20-2010 10:55 PM

Dubstep is great. I've been working on producing it myself recently. Chasing Shadows, Coki, Mt Eden, Datsik, etc... all great Dub artists.

CanwllCorfe 04-21-2010 06:00 PM

Dubstep is hit or miss with me. Scuba and Burial are the only artists I keep track of.. although Burial seems to be getting more and more into ambient

Does anyone know the name of this track http ://picosong.com/FNMt/ ?

frozen smoke 06-06-2013 10:13 AM

I think Dubstep is one of the only genres that you have to dig in there with your ears and find the hidden melody. It truly is a great genre. So many things happening at once and then "POW" it comes together unexpected.

Gavin B. 07-30-2013 03:29 PM

Dubstep is a government hoax to make everybody feel stupid and powerless.

terreror 07-30-2013 06:58 PM

I think it's going to leave a mark in the electronic music scene for this period now,the 10's,or whatever it's called. That specific for the dubstep music wobble sound will become a classic sound, just like roland alpha juno's famous hoover sound was for the early 90's.Just my thought.

JGuy Grungeman 11-08-2015 09:02 AM

Dubstep thread

Couldn't find one, correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm still diving into dubstep. I love brostep, though (edgy dubstep basically).

a4m 11-10-2015 11:27 AM

Dubstep was fun the first time I heard it (2010), but it gets old pretty fast. I like certain albums with dub influence, but nothing like the "brostep" you refer to. I do like certain artists like Clubroot, Burial, and Skream. Other than that, not really a genre I dug that deep into.

JGuy Grungeman 11-10-2015 11:39 AM

I conserve it. I listen to a little bit at a time throughout periods of time so I sti'l enjoy it.
