I brought it up to point out how there's a huge disconnection between your average Pitchfork reader/indie fan, and members of the so-called "dance community."

To the average Pitchfork reader, them handing out a 9.1 to H&LA is outrageous, but to someone who supposedly "knows their ****," H&LA is a fantastic disco record that deserves all the praise it gets. Dance fans complain about Pitchfork overrating bad albums and underrating good ones, but it also works both ways. Philip Sherburne, being an active member of the dance community and someone with great taste, thinks H&LA is great, but the average Pitchfork reader probably can't figure out why Pitchfork thought some disco album deserved a 9.1 and a Best New Music mention.

Basically, if you really "appreciate" dance music, H&LA being given a 9.1 isn't that big a deal, but if you're not heavily involved in that scene you're probably just shaking your head wondering why they overrated H&LA so much.

I'm not sure they really fit into the electro music scene. This is no minimal house or whatever the fuck that would have your average indie Joe (like myself) scratching their head as to why anyone would listen to it. I like this album, I think some songs are fantastic, but you'd be hard pressed to sell the aforementioned trio of songs as good under the pretense that I just don't "appreciate" dance music and/or am not "heavily involved in the scene". It's just bad music, period. :\

It is heavily steeped in dance culture, because the average indie Joe probably isn't going to enjoy a disco album except for the irony factor.

Plus, if you read Sherburne's review, he does think those are good songs, so difference in tastes aside, you probably could make an argument that someone more involved in the scene does think those songs are good, and not "bad music, period." I have yet to hear anyone else really weigh in on those songs in particular though, so maybe Sherburne is alone liking those.

Also, a lot of this album really would fit right in with what a lot of big name DJs are doing these days, so I'd say it has more in common with the "electro scene" than it does with Pitchfork indie.

I don't really think its up for debate whether or not Sounds of Silver was overrated. That album was on nearly every list and no one would shut up about it from the time it leaked until...well they still won't. I kept/keep getting bugged to listen to it despite the fact I'd say I didn't care for it.
