Crystal Castles

Have many you heard of them? They sound kind of like Gameboy music, they have a female vocalist which has her voice distorted in a lot of the songs. Highly recommended if you're on Acid. I really enjoying their self titled album, which was released in 2008.

Sneer 04-21-2009 10:46 PM

I prefer their EPs to the album, which i felt was inconsistant. The Alice Practice and Crimewave EPs are sweet as.

very trippy sometimes they use too much of the video game sounds

Sneer 04-22-2009 12:02 PM

Is your name supposed to be Laviathin or Leviathan? Its bugging me.

I haven't heard the EPs but I agree that the album is inconsistent. I like pretty much all the songs on it individually but they don't flow very well together. I think they would've had better results if they just split the songs up and made two short albums out of it, or a full-length and a EP.

It is, but that's what attracts me to it. Each song has some unpredictable sound to it. But everyone likes songs set out in different ways.

I look forward to hearing more of their material. :)

Malicious Wakizashi 04-26-2009 02:22 PM

Crystal Castles is pretty good through them I was able to discover a band I love even more--Health. Crimewave is a collaboration between the two bands.

And this is just Croatia, the fucking backwater. I can't even imagine what they have going on in Germany or France.

So pretty please, admit you exaggerated, just this once...?http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...bigsadeyes.gif

Hey, you go to Airbound? there's about 200 people from Dublin heading in a group. a lot of the people going are djing there and stuff. a good few of them played last year too.
It's an organisation called bodytonic here in dublin, it should be a good trip!

My friend got me into this group recently. They dress like the Ramones.

I was totally joking though. I just don't advocate telling the world about your problems. I keep my addictions a secret. lol.

jsscka 05-06-2009 01:38 PM

They really have ripped off videogame music, and not that I'm a gamer, but I find DJ Lankizzle, a hip hop DJ, more aptly utilizes 8-bit.

Still, that Health remix of Crimewave is damn good, but, that's just because Health mf roolzzz.

Also, I'm new here.

Hi! Jess, 21, female, Toronto.

What does "getting rapped" mean?

DearJenny 05-12-2009 12:39 PM

^I was thinking the same thing.

edwardbroadway 05-22-2009 12:05 PM

I think she often sounds like she's getting rapped.

It's a Yugoslavian term. Literally translated, it means peeled-fruit bearhug.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 05-22-2009 01:36 PM

hipster trash but fun from time to time any how

IWP 05-27-2009 11:50 PM

I'm digging this a little. Not really a fan of the vocals, but aside from that this band is pretty good.

sakana 06-21-2009 07:53 AM

crystal castles are pretty much the first band of this style i've heard, but thats purely because i'm just starting to get into this type of music. a year ago i mostly listened to hip-hop, a year before that, punk.

now i'm hearing stuff like crystal castles, boys noize, health and toyz noyz and loving it all.

noot 07-09-2009 12:34 PM

Crystal Castles killed the 8bit scene.

but luckily, most people who like crystal castles don't bother listening to chiptune artists
(and ethan should kick alice out :x)

cardboard adolescent 01-03-2010 02:42 AM

oh gawd i'm in love with alice glass

Haha, one of the youtube comments for this is, "Wow, this song is like crushing up a Super Nintendo cartridge and snorting it!" That's great. ><

Who's song is it being remixed there? It sounds familiar, but I don't think it's originally theirs right?

Anyway, seems like they might not be too popular on MB, but I think they're pretty great.

Got their CD last year, but I've already listened to it so many times that I feel like it came out ages ago, and I keep wondering and hoping that they'll put out something new already. Like I seriously didn't realize it's only a year old until I just went and checked on amazon...just seems like an old classic in my head. :|

debaserr 04-28-2010 01:10 PM

new album leaked.

+81 04-28-2010 03:00 PM

and so happy it has! Doe Deer is crazy good.

Exeggcute :3 05-17-2010 01:33 PM

I might have missed a large discussion somewhere else, but I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned Crystal Castles (II) in this thread after the official release! I'm really enjoying it, I mean Doe Deer is **** crazy, Celestica is quite the classic as are empathy and Baptism. I think that Not in Love is the best track on the album, though, as it just builds up towards the end and just unleashes shed loads of Crystal Castles.

It's a lot more relaxed than the first album, less of an obvious hit but it creeps up on you more.

How is the new album in comparison to their self titled?

kurapika 05-18-2010 07:25 PM

I like them except I'm not a huge fan of Alice Glass' vocals and lyrics..

Although. They're self-titled debut in '08 was superior; I think.

Well, "Crystal Castles (II)" is still self titled :P

Like I said before it's definitely less striking than the first album, and less of the tunes stand out in the same way. But their musical style has evolved slightly, and the majority of their tunes are more relaxing this time round, and I think a reasonable amount of them are more epic, even if they're not anthem like (I'm thinking "Not in Love" from (II) vs Untrust Us from (I).)

So yeah, I suppose don't expect to be blown away by (II) as you were by (I) but if you give it a reasonable chance you will (hopefully :P) find that it's as least as good as (I). At least, I did.

Were amazing at Reading Festival, am so jealous of my friends who went to see them!

BBC - Reading + Leeds Festival - Crystal Castles

Really? I find now if I say to myself "I want to listen to a Crystal Castles album" I almost always go for the second. Sure it doesn't have quite as much mental but it is more listen-able and is an excellent electronic album. It doesn't ever really go into mainstream house or whatever other electronic music you might also consider mainstream so it's definitely still unique in it's style. I love it. I mean an album that can incorporate say these 4 different styles of song is amazing:
