And to me, Shpongle and Infected Mushroom are a lot faster and have a much more upbeat feel to them, whereas CBL is much simpler, more repetitive, and slower, good background music. I really like all four of these bands, but that's about my extent of knowledge in electronica excluding electro type bands and stuff like The Postal Service.

Yeah they're definitely psy trance. I've never been into psy or goa as much as the other types. They're a bit too inaccessible for me

Sounds like one of those songs that gets passed around in P2P programs when you look up "techno trance dance house rave mix".

I just started getting into Airbase! Love it. George Acosta is wonderful and I am obsessed with Markus Schulz. Nice selection!

Airbase is great! His material has started to get more on the electro side of things like most other artists. George Acosta has REALLY gone electro and even collaborated with Robbie Rivera, and Markus Schulz is downright incredible. I love his bittersweet compositions and the fact he doesn't make music that's TOO uplifting that it almost sounds cheesy.

 I whole heartedly agree. Pretty amazing stuff like The New World which is as you describe. Uplifting but not cheesy.

Above & Beyond are fantastic, one of my favorites.

Not to forget BT's new album that's coming out. From what I've heard off of it so far, it sounds fantastic. Simply fantastic. He's always been one of my favorites.

Also, am I the only one that finds remixes of Madonna's music absolutely amazing? D: It's always just so good. Words can't truly describe how great some of those remixes are. Well, on that note, my favorite remix would have to be Shane 54's Pink Flood Remix to "Music". I strongly suggest that to anybody.

Naw, I'm with you on that. I actually own a few of her remix singles cd's, like Music and Ray of Light. Sirius has been playing the crap outta the remixes from her newest cd still, and you're right, it just always seems to be amazing somehow. :D

Python 11-20-2009 08:48 PM

:D Yes! As long as I'm not the only one who feels that way about her stuff. Around here, they don't really play her stuff anymore at all. They've moved on to other things. Although, to be honest, I rather like Paul Oakenfold's Remix Dub for "Celebration". Something about it is just too good.

Dieselboy 11-21-2009 05:46 PM

This song was huge on A State of Trance a few months ago. Alot of times trance songs won't stick with me too long just cause there's so much of it out there, but I keep coming back to this song again and again. It's just so beautiful and her voice honestly gives me chills still.

Trance song of the year maybe?

Python 11-21-2009 09:06 PM

Ooou. Sarah Howells is a good trance vocalist, this is very true. That song is good, too. I especially enjoy it from 1.45 to the end. I'm not overly fond of it before that point though. The song does have the potential to be the trance song of the year though, I can definitely see it.

If you like Sarah Howells, then I have to strongly suggest that you check out "Let It All Out" by Lange and her. If you haven't already, that is. That song is splendid, I love her voice in it.

Yeah definitely a fan of hers.

Just checked out "Let It All Out". Thought I had heard all the songs that shes been in so far, but somehow that one had gotten past me I guess. Brilliant song though of course...just like everything else she's in. :thumb:

I usually like the remixes too. Although, given the calibre of producer that chooses/is chosen to re-model it's hardly surprising that there's a little bit of something out there for us EDM fans!

That's a bold statement and one that I will have to disagree with! It's good but wouldn't feature in my best of the year :)

I donno, theres so much trance out there atm, and I'm not someone who tries to take every bit of it in. I only listen to a couple shows a week, like ASoT and sometimes Russia Goes Clubbing or maybe Roger Shah's show...maybe a few compilations here and there. So I mean it's not like I've heard everything out there since last Jan. That might not even be possible.
For me personally, I think it's the best I've heard this year though.

What do you think? I mean the year's almost over...what song or songs were the best this year?

Oops, rather backed myself into a corner there. Favourites are highly subjective and it's pretty unlikely that we would get a democratic decision over the best trance song of the year in a small electronic community such as the one here. I didn't mean to come across as negative as for all I know there may be a far greater number of people that like that track compared to what I would suggest.

These are a couple of tracks that would make my top ten or so. There are some newer songs too that I like but I would have to wait until the novelty factor wore off before deciding whether they will become classics in my mind.

I'm surprised you don't listen to Trance Around the World (Above & Beyond), it's a good weekly show!

Yeah its all good, I didn't think you were being negative. I mean I could probably tell 100 trance fans that song was my favorite and maybe none would agree with me...wouldn't hurt my feelings or anything. Everyone's gonna have their own personal favorites for the year...I was just throwing that one out there as mine I guess.

I've listened to Trance Around the World a few times, yeah. I honestly listen to quite a few radio shows every week, and every show is 2 hours long pretty much, so it's hard to get in everything I'd like. That's definitely a good show too though.

^Gonna check those out :thumb:

Edit: Just did listen to 'em. All awesome :D. The second one especially...the intro was great and had me nodding my head from the very start...then just got better and better. Definitely gonna have to give it a few more listens at least.

Dieselboy 12-05-2009 03:36 PM

From ASoT 433 this week. Nice intro, and then at 2:25 this slow piano melody starts up and it turns this into an amazing tune. I swear I've heard that melody before somewhere. From that point on though, the build up is totally epic. Great, great song. :thumb:

My God I was listening to this as I clicked onto this thread! I agree, it is an absolutely beautiful track!

CanwllCorfe 12-08-2009 05:04 PM

Progressive uplifting seems to have a more profound effect on me than the usual stuff like Sean Tyas. That's part of why I've really gotten into progressive house lately with stuff like Mango and Shingo Nakamura.

Dieselboy 12-11-2009 07:15 PM

There's quite a few remixes of this song, but I like the original the most.

Also, this was the lead track on ASOT this week, and I have to say that this may have been my favorite show Armin has done this year. Just 2 hours of really solid tracks. It's worth DL'ing and checking out if you missed it. :)

Roger Shah & Ralph Fritsch - Black Pearl Rising (Original Mix)

Edit:
I think :55 - 2:00 might be one of the most gorgeous backgrounds I've seen in a trance vid. :P

Dieselboy 12-21-2009 06:20 PM

Trance cover of The Cure - Lovesong from ASoT this week.

I've heard quite a few covers of this song over the years and they never fail just cause the original lyrics are so amazing. Honestly, you could cover this with a cowbell and I'd still dig it probably. :D

Also, this weeks ASoT episode on the 24th is the 20 top trance songs of the year as voted by the listeners of ASoT. Should be an amazing show to check out. :)

I'll be sure to check that out at some point^ Not too keen on that remix for some reason and I have no idea why. It just doesn't do anything for me :(

On a related note (this post reminded me actually as I was having a sneaky listen to ASoT in work), this has been buzzing around for a little while now and every time I hear it, I find it gets stuck in my head for hours... annoyingly so in fact (in a good way ofc)

A State of Trance, sorry.

It's Armin Van Buuren's weekly trance/progressive radio show. Arguably one of the best trance radio shows around, and probably the most popular.

"claims to have over 30 million weekly listeners in more than 40 countries, which would make it the most listened to radio show in the world." - Wiki :P

Popular, yes, the best - no TBH. Not anymore that is. I have heard every single ASOT up to date and episodes from 100 to let's say about 250 is IMO most epic era of ASOT. Now every week I hear new episode I'm only reminded just how boring the current trance scene is.

Corsten's Countdown wipes the floor with ASOT any day. :)

Fast Frankie 12-28-2009 01:06 AM

I like the more progressive side of Trance, have you checked out Cass?

I was really into trance a few years ago but haven't been digging the scene much lately.

EDIT: Check out these labels for some great trance artists

I beg to differ, I think there's a lot of great stuff out there at the moment and plenty of new talent that keeps pushing the genre forward. People like Gareth Emery, Mat Zo, Ronski Speed etc. have all released some cracking material recently that really deserves credit.

I've never listened to Corsten's Countdown in all fairness so can't really comment and from what I can see, it isn't played on any station in the UK and there's no podcast...:(

I thought Cass was more a House/Techno producer? I know he does some progressive stuff but it's definitely toward the house end of the spectrum.

Compared to past glory of ASOT, this is poor. Shiny names mean nothing to be honest, ASOT is NOW mostly about cheesy, repetitive stuff, which is exactly what Armin plays at his gigs. For "World's No. 1 DJ" I'd have expected more.

Armin is people's champion and crowd pleaser, his stuff he plays on gigs and chooses for weekly ASOT is okay - but only if you're casual listener (not meant to offend, BTW).

It seems that many find don't mind the mainstream course that the show took; I take it you have seen ASOT's Top 20 tunes of 2009? You will see exactly what I mean. :)

Ah, popularity/fanbase doesn't indicate quality. I listen to ASOT by Armin, Trance Around the World by Above and Beyond, Tiesto's Club Life by Tiesto and Corsten's Countdown is by far best weekly show around, regardless of popularity.

Umm, I never actually mentioned the quality of ASoT or Armin's set lists in my post so no offense taken :p: I will endeavor to listen to Corsten's Countdown, it's just a pain to have to stream it because of internet restrictions currently placed upon me.

My initial response was based around your comment that "the current trance scene is boring". I think you only really need to dig just below the surface to find trance music that you can enjoy. There's so much out there at the moment that many people will find a sub-genre they enjoy and there are plenty of younger artists willing to push the boundaries.

Ah, my mistake in misunderstanding then.

But trust me, I do take great efforts to find songs that are stuck in underground recognition but for past 2 years or so, I don't think I've heard a song that I'd be able to put in my "top 100" trance list. Everything I seem to hear gives off the vibe of "been there, done that" and it really really pisses me off. :)

CanwllCorfe 12-28-2009 02:37 PM

I listen to anything that sounds good. If it's popular, I wouldn't know because I live in the US where we don't even really have a trance scene. I'm into stuff like Andy Blueman and Bjorn Akesson but lately have gotten into Progressive. I've given up on any of the REAL popular producers because to stay afloat they've been combining Electro and House. Tiesto doesn't even hide it. Ferry Corsten is staying closer to the true Trance scene but that's not to say Armin's show doesn't have quality stuff. Call of Loneliness is probably one of the greatest songs I've heard in some time. It walks the line between progressive and epic so well.

IWP 01-05-2010 09:49 PM

Ferry Corsten's We Belong is the ****! I think I found a new favorite trance song.
