Does anyone like Breakbeats anymore?
I am looking through this forum for the first time and have realized that not one thread so far is in anyway related to Breakbeats! Maybe it's because I am from Florida and it was huge here that i like it so much??? It just seems to be more danceable then techno or drum and bass.... I like all EDM, don't get me wrong but a good breaks track is what gets the crowd dancing. what are your opinions on Breakbeats, I'm curious.

I really wish my knowledge of Breakbeat was more comprehensive as I love this genre but I can only give the same band names out:
Freestylers Krafty Kuts A.Skillz Stanton Warriors Freq Nasty as you say it's the big beats but within an easily digestable frame. A funky huge bass line is the business. Here is a Breakbeat compilation I made a few weeks back that you are welcome to download and listen to: http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...tml#post665205 |
I was into breaks quite a bit around 2001-2003, there's some great stuff there. What I got into was apparently referred to as nu-skool breaks, which eventually started veering too much into progressive territory for my taste (Hybrid and such). There was this awesome internet radio station based in San Francisco I discovered at that time and the stuff they were playing completely blew my mind. I mean completely...I would listen to it all day every day at the office. I wish I could remember the name, all I remember is it was "something K" or "K something". I vaguely remember two of the DJs being either DJ Felix or Felix the Cat (not Felix da Housecat) and DJ Clockwork or something to that effect.
These days I rarely listen to house, breaks, or drum n bass and listen mostly to IDM-related stuff...when it comes to electronic. But a good breaks mix sounds pretty good right now. Edit: A bit of googling leads me to Felix the Dog...I think that was him. Originally from the UK apparently. |

Except, and I hope you're not offended by this, I can't stand Florida breaks... U know, the generic sounding simple electro breaks? Not sure if that's what you're into. I also don't like vocal breaks in the jazzy nuskool vein. I'm all about bassline breaks, nuskool, glitch, hardcore breaks.. Basically anything dark and dirty, with the exception of progressive, which I take as pretty as you please. |

Some Nu-Electro breaks and some good ol'e fashioned bassline breaks. You'll shit yaself. |

There's nothing like a booty break to make you shake. Breakbeats have just crossed over into a median music. Everyone is mixing them in between their dnb, electro, edm, techno, hiphop, basically to get to their next track they use breaks as a sort of comic relief. It's sad really. |
I like the dark and bass-heavy stuff too, and don't really like the Florida breaks as much either.
I'm jamming to some breaks right now, inspired by this thread. :hphones: I used to have this on CD but let a "friend" borrow it (among other CDs) and never got them back. :banghead: Thank god for the internets. I'm having a breaks party all by myself up in here. Found a few Felix the Dog mixes last night, just started one up. Beats are sooooo fat, now I really miss listening to breaks all day. :D

I am so happy to see every one respond in a positive way. Truthfully, i was expecting people to tell me that they didn't like breaks anymore... as for the type of breaks i like personally...
I am a chick so I have a special place in my heart for vocal breaks...as well as florida breaks because, like i said earlier, i am from Florida lol. I absolutely LOVE dirty breaks and hardcore breaks...Some of my favorites right now are Dj Fixx Infiniti Santana Deekline and wizard Screwface C-vaughn Dj Trashy Baby Anne And OLD dj Icee to name a few... It is really sad the the scene here in Fl has died away to house and hip hop.... :( I get so hyped though when I hear a good breaks track, Thanks again for all the positive feedback... |
Don't know anything about this genre, but I'll be looking into a lot of these aforementioned bands.
