Tangerine Dream

If there's a thread for these guys, don't blame me...blame the search tool. I am a little surprised there isn't one, though.

Basically all I have is a hits compilation that I really like, so I'm looking to expand on these guys a bit. Where do I start? These guys have an absolutely massive discography, so once I listen to more, I would love to discuss it.

I have AHEM 117 albums! Where to start? Jeez. They did change their sound from Krautrock and some of their early work is stunning: Alpha Centurai, Phaedra and Force Majeure are standouts from the 70's. Thief OST, Poland and Underwater Sunlight from the 80's. Melrose and Rockoon from the 90's should set you out on their way. I did a 2 part comp a while back on the beginner's sharing thread and the links are obviously down I can sort the comp back out for you if you like.

Hmm...I'm more of an album by album kind of guy so I think I'll start with the 70's and work my way up from there. I have a soft spot for 70's electronic stuff anyway...I've also heard good things about Alpha Centauri so I think I'll start there.

So have you actually thoroughly digested all 117 of those albums? God damn...not one single artist in my library even comes close. Considering your taste in music and that I already enjoy TD, I'll be looking forward to this...

No there are quite a few albums I have not even got around to listening to TBH but I love most of their soundtrack work especially Thief (as mentioned) and Near Dark.

Phaedra is good, the comp is uneven, Rubykon i don't like much

I bought the albums that you passed on, Howard, and vice versa: I had Ricochet and Stratosfear, but after buying 1977`s Sourcerer soundtrack, I felt I`d heard enough TD for a while. I don`t know if it`s me or the music, but I used to put these albums on, then get impatient waiting for the good bit to turn up...

I am very surprised that there isn't more chat about these guys who basically invented the modern Electronic film score as well as having one of the biggest discographies ever and yes quantity doesn't always equal quality but Zappa has 100 albums + too!

A lot of bands owe a lot to Tangerine Dream in the Electronic/ Ambient music scene, they often are in the shadow of Kraftwerk which is a shame.

Errr Tangerine Dream began life as a Krautrock band and one are the longest surviving bands in that genre and Electronic music was in it's infancy in 1969 when they started! So BEGINNING with drums and guitars is fine by me.

I should ad, I really love Rubicon.
