Electronica & EDM combination album club! ® (Whew!)

À la Trollheart, I will steal someone else's idea and create the electronica album club!

If you are unfamiliar with Trollheart's Progressive Rock Album Club, the basic gist of this thread is that a member will nominate an album, we will dismiss for a week or so to listen to it and fill out our questionnaires, and then regroup a week or something after that to talk about it.
Then we will move on to the next member, etc...

This post will contain all relevant information for the club.

All electronic music genres are valid.

We will use this for the order we will go in, starting with me.
  1. Wpnfire
  2. Janszoon
  3. Briks
  4. YorkeDaddy
  5. djChameleon
  6. Goofle11
  7. Zer0
  8. Frownland
  9. Vanilla
  10. Deviouz
  11. Black Francis
  12. Rjinn
  13. jackhammer
  14. Silenzio

If you want to join, just leave a post in this thread telling me you are interested.

Instructions for selecting an album

When it is your turn to pick, you may select any electronica album and post the album title and artist, (preferably with a picture of the album cover) along with a short, one or two sentence description about the artist's background.
It is not necessary to post any other information about the album, as its musical composition can be discovered by members listening to the album, obviously.
Again, all electronic music genres are valid.

Questions

The following is the list of questions that should answered by members while, or after listening to the album selected. The completed questionnaires will be used for discussion purposes.
NOTE: There is no length requirement for any of your answers.
1. What were your VERY FIRST impressions on listening to the album, say from the first five minutes in (first time)?
2. Did your first impressions change, i.e., did the album get better or worse as you listened to it (first time)?
3. Which was stronger in your opinion, the opening tracks (first 2-3 songs), or the ending tracks (last 2-3 songs)?
4. On repeated listens (if you did so), did you find you liked the album more, or less? Feel free to be very detailed if you like.
5. What is your favorite track from the album, if you have one?
6. What is your least favorite track from the album, if you have one?
7. Did you change your favorite or least favorite track as you listened to the album?
8. How would you describe the variety of tracks available on this album? Feel free to be very detailed if you like.
9. What is the overall mood on this album?
10. Is this an album you would listen to again all the way through (for personal, recreational use, outside of listening to it for this club), or are there just a few songs that you would listen to?
11. How well do you already know the band/artist?
12. If you are familiar with this band/artist, how would you compare this album to any of their earlier/later material?
13. Do you see any way the album could have been improved?
14. Would you recommend this album to others?
15. Are you interested in listening to more albums by this band?
16. What sub-genre, if any, would you assign this music to?
17. (NOTE: Ignore this question if the album does not have lyrics.) Did you like the vocalist? Hate him/her? Any impressions?
18. Your overall album rating on a scale of 1-10 (whole numbers please. Also, please BOLD or otherwise make this rating easy to see. Use this color pattern for ratings:

12345678910
)?

ENTIRELY OPTIONAL QUESTIONS
19. What do you think of the production?
20. Any other thoughts you had about this album you would like to share?

Janszoon 04-01-2014 02:46 PM

I'm in!

Isbjørn 04-01-2014 02:56 PM

Sure, I'm in. Not sure how active I'll be, but surely I can make time for this once in a while.

YorkeDaddy 04-01-2014 02:56 PM

I'm definitely in.

djchameleon 04-01-2014 03:58 PM

I am horrible with keeping up with clubs unless I am running it but I will listen and give my input.

The Cake Is A Lie

Goofle 04-01-2014 04:05 PM

I'm also going to say I am in.

Wpnfire 04-01-2014 07:50 PM

Well, that's more than four people!

I'll see tomorrow where we stand in members, I know Mondo Bungle said he would be interested...

I've spent hours tirelessly looking through Trollheart's thread and thinking of things on my own, (by the way trollheart, thanks for letting me copy your thread), about the best way for this club to work. This is what I've come up with:
  • Every member gets a turn to pick an album, and we will cycle through who gets to pick next.
  • The only qualification for an album is that the artist should not be TOO popular. (Or if it's a popular artist, an unpopular album also would suffice) I plan on not being too strict with this rule.
  • Music-wise, the albums CAN be entirely instrumental, given that a large amount of electronic music is without vocals (we can discuss this, of course)
  • We will dismiss to listen to the album and fill out a small questionnaire.
  • We will return and discuss the album and post our completed questionnaires.
  • The questionnaire will most likely be the same from the prog club, though I will of course make some personal changes due to the difference between electronica and prog.

It probably makes sense for me to start by declaring which album we will listen to first, but I just realized how difficult this will be!!

While I have some ideas for the album I would like to do, I have NO idea how you all can listen to albums without buying them. I've checked, and all of the albums I was thinking of are not available on Youtube (and I don't own them).

The only one I've thought of that we could listen to would be Effiel 65's Europop album, but I'm not entirely sure that this is an electronic album, or merely a pop album?? What do you guys think does that count? I doubt anybody has listened to that album aside from that one song.

I've also considered an album by Moby, though he may be too popular...

I may delegate someone else to declare the first album if I can't find anything that fits.

Also, you maybe able to tell that I don't know much about electronic music outside of the dance and house scene.

Also, also, this is a good time to discuss something else I did not mention in my first post. Everyone is well aware that this thread includes ALL genres of electronic music correct?

Everything from dance, house, techno, drum and bass, and all of the sub-genres are all fair game. The only exception would probably be ambience and dubstep, though I can't see that becoming an issue. We can decided on dubstep, I'm still not too sure about that.

I don't know if I made that clear in my first post.

Janszoon 04-01-2014 07:53 PM

Why wouldn't we include ambient?

Oh, I just assumed it wouldn't be interesting enough for everybody else. I listen to ambient stuff all the time, and I don't have a problem with that if you all want to do it.

Like I said, we can talk about it. :)

As long as there's enough variety, ambience and dubstep oriented albums are both fine.

Zer0 04-02-2014 06:17 AM

I'm in if you completely drop the restrictions on ambient and dubstep.
