Electronica & EDM combination album club! ® (Whew!)
À la Trollheart, I will steal someone else's idea and create the electronica album club!
If you are unfamiliar with Trollheart's Progressive Rock Album Club, the basic gist of this thread is that a member will nominate an album, we will dismiss for a week or so to listen to it and fill out our questionnaires, and then regroup a week or something after that to talk about it. Then we will move on to the next member, etc... This post will contain all relevant information for the club. All electronic music genres are valid. We will use this for the order we will go in, starting with me.
If you want to join, just leave a post in this thread telling me you are interested. Instructions for selecting an album When it is your turn to pick, you may select any electronica album and post the album title and artist, (preferably with a picture of the album cover) along with a short, one or two sentence description about the artist's background. It is not necessary to post any other information about the album, as its musical composition can be discovered by members listening to the album, obviously. Again, all electronic music genres are valid. Questions The following is the list of questions that should answered by members while, or after listening to the album selected. The completed questionnaires will be used for discussion purposes. NOTE: There is no length requirement for any of your answers. 1. What were your VERY FIRST impressions on listening to the album, say from the first five minutes in (first time)? 2. Did your first impressions change, i.e., did the album get better or worse as you listened to it (first time)? 3. Which was stronger in your opinion, the opening tracks (first 2-3 songs), or the ending tracks (last 2-3 songs)? 4. On repeated listens (if you did so), did you find you liked the album more, or less? Feel free to be very detailed if you like. 5. What is your favorite track from the album, if you have one? 6. What is your least favorite track from the album, if you have one? 7. Did you change your favorite or least favorite track as you listened to the album? 8. How would you describe the variety of tracks available on this album? Feel free to be very detailed if you like. 9. What is the overall mood on this album? 10. Is this an album you would listen to again all the way through (for personal, recreational use, outside of listening to it for this club), or are there just a few songs that you would listen to? 11. How well do you already know the band/artist? 12. If you are familiar with this band/artist, how would you compare this album to any of their earlier/later material? 13. Do you see any way the album could have been improved? 14. Would you recommend this album to others? 15. Are you interested in listening to more albums by this band? 16. What sub-genre, if any, would you assign this music to? 17. (NOTE: Ignore this question if the album does not have lyrics.) Did you like the vocalist? Hate him/her? Any impressions? 18. Your overall album rating on a scale of 1-10 (whole numbers please. Also, please BOLD or otherwise make this rating easy to see. Use this color pattern for ratings: ENTIRELY OPTIONAL QUESTIONS 19. What do you think of the production? 20. Any other thoughts you had about this album you would like to share? |
I'm in!
|
Sure, I'm in. Not sure how active I'll be, but surely I can make time for this once in a while.
|
I'm definitely in.
|
I am horrible with keeping up with clubs unless I am running it but I will listen and give my input.
The Cake Is A Lie |
I'm also going to say I am in.
|
Well, that's more than four people!
I'll see tomorrow where we stand in members, I know Mondo Bungle said he would be interested... I've spent hours tirelessly looking through Trollheart's thread and thinking of things on my own, (by the way trollheart, thanks for letting me copy your thread), about the best way for this club to work. This is what I've come up with:
It probably makes sense for me to start by declaring which album we will listen to first, but I just realized how difficult this will be!! While I have some ideas for the album I would like to do, I have NO idea how you all can listen to albums without buying them. I've checked, and all of the albums I was thinking of are not available on Youtube (and I don't own them). The only one I've thought of that we could listen to would be Effiel 65's Europop album, but I'm not entirely sure that this is an electronic album, or merely a pop album?? What do you guys think does that count? I doubt anybody has listened to that album aside from that one song. I've also considered an album by Moby, though he may be too popular... I may delegate someone else to declare the first album if I can't find anything that fits. Also, you maybe able to tell that I don't know much about electronic music outside of the dance and house scene. Also, also, this is a good time to discuss something else I did not mention in my first post. Everyone is well aware that this thread includes ALL genres of electronic music correct? Everything from dance, house, techno, drum and bass, and all of the sub-genres are all fair game. The only exception would probably be ambience and dubstep, though I can't see that becoming an issue. We can decided on dubstep, I'm still not too sure about that. I don't know if I made that clear in my first post. |
Why wouldn't we include ambient?
|
Quote:
Like I said, we can talk about it. :) As long as there's enough variety, ambience and dubstep oriented albums are both fine. |
I'm in if you completely drop the restrictions on ambient and dubstep.
|
I'll join because I don't know too much about the genre. I agree on dropping the restrictions.
|
I think ambient would be very interesting, so I agree with the last couple of posters
|
*Update 2* – Questionnaire, Members list
Well, alright then, I'll remove the restrictions. All genres are fair game.
I have compiled a list of members and completed a very rough questionnaire. I will post both here now, and I will (try) to keep the current copy of both the member list, and questionnaire in the first post of this thread, which can be found here. Quote:

Well alright then, it all looks good to me. Let's get this shit started.
|
Quote:
Start throwing out suggestions for the first album that we review. Sub Focus - S/t Bassnectar - Underground Communication Mat Zo - Damage Control |
Quote:
The way the prog. club is run now is that every member gets a turn to pick an album for the group to listen to. I think we should run this thread the same way, though I am fine with someone else possibly coming up with the first album as I am still searching for a suitable album we all can listen to. |
Some more suggestions
Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica Eno, Moebius, Roedelius - After the Heat (kind of electronic) Jon Hassell - Aka/Darbari/Java: Magic Realism |

I'd prefer to see Wpnfire picking an album. Then Jans, Briks, YD and so on. Much easier than this recommendation rigmarole.
|
Well it seemed like Wpnfire didn't really know where to start when picking his own album so now he has a few ideas at least!

Eiffel 65 – Contact | circa. 2000
Quote:
Anyway, If there's no objections, I declare this to be our first album. Click on the picture for the full album YouTube link. The Contact! album starts at precisely 1:06:00, (that's an hour and six minutes). The songs are moderately good quality. I chose Contact! because the album is overshadowed due to the group's earlier album and debut album, Europop. While Eiffel 65 is a relatively known artist, this album is relatively unknown. Unlike it's predecessor, Contact! was not NEARLY as successful internationally. The album is a marked departure from their earlier material as the band appears to be influenced by the exploding French House scene. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...65_contact.jpg If anybody has already heard this, we will probably do that Replica album. |
I recognized their song "Blue" because pretty much everyone has heard that song, but that's it. I'm downloading "Contact" now, I'll post my impressions using your outline pretty soon.
|
I think we should go through the rigmarole of recommending albums... :o:

I think all members should plan to have their questionnaires posted here by April 9.
I understand that's plenty of time, but I'm out of town for a few days, and I thought we should give more people time to join since this thread only began two days ago. Janszoon, I believe you will be the next to pick, and considering the unreliability of finding an album on YouTube, if you need me to buy the album you are considering, I can do so and send it to the rest of the members. |

It's funny, YouTube is such an inconvenient way for me to listen to albums that I sometimes forget other people use it for that. |

It's pretty hard to ask "You seriously don't know about downloading music on the internet?" without sounding condescending so I'll just admit to it in this post.

lulz. I also don't know where I would find drugs if I wanted to buy them either. |

Look all I'm saying is, if anybody needs help finding an album for this club, we'll help you do that. |

What were your VERY FIRST impressions on listening to the album, say from the first five minutes in (first time)?
"Why God why?". Did your first impressions change, i.e., did the album get better or worse as you listened to it (first time)? It didn't necessarily get better or worse. It's the same sort of thing all the way through, so maybe I started to dislike it more due to repetition? Which was stronger in your opinion, the opening tracks (first 2-3 songs), or the ending tracks (last 2-3 songs)? Though it contradicts with my previous answer, I actually preferred the last 5/6 tracks more than the first. On repeated listens (if you did so), did you find you liked the album more, or less? Feel free to be very detailed if you like. I did not listen again. What is your favorite track from the album, if you have one? "Back In Time" What is your least favorite track from the album, if you have one? "Crazy" Did you change your favorite or least favorite track as you listened to the album? I think I could have changed that opinion regularly to be honest. How would you describe the variety of tracks available on this album? Feel free to be very detailed if you like. The variety is basically non-existent. What is the overall mood on this album? Plastic smiles? Is this an album you would listen to again all the way through (for personal, recreational use, outside of listening to it for this club), or are there just a few songs that you would listen to? No. How well do you already know the band/artist? I know them because of "Blue" and "Move Your Body", both of which aren't on here unfortunately. If you are familiar with this band/artist, how would you compare this album to any of their earlier/later material? Those two songs are miles better than anything on here. Do you see any way the album could have been improved? Yes, as I didn't like it much. It's too fake and bouncy, without being particularly catchy. Would you recommend this album to others? Nope. Are you interested in listening to more albums by this band? Nope. What sub-genre, if any, would you assign this music to? Euro-pop/Electro-pop. Your overall album rating on a scale of 1-10 (whole numbers please. Also, please BOLD or otherwise make this rating easy to see)? 2/10 Did you like the vocalist? Hate him/her? Any impressions? I didn't hate him but I certainly didn't like him. What did you think of the lyrical content? Probably would have been better without lyrics. Were there any songs where you thought the repeated vocals were annoying? 1 through 17. Did any of the remixes of the songs change your view of the original songs (i.e., did you like the remix version better, worse)? To be honest, I didn't listen to the remixes on here (that were available on the Spotify version). What do you think of the production? Far too clean and sticky. Any other thoughts you had about this album you would like to share? It's good to know people with such little talent can make money off making music. |
