I actually like the song 'Shiny Happy People'. It was the main reason why I bought R.E.M.'s album 'Out of Time', as in my opinion, it's the only song on the album that I happen to like. I haven't seen the video, and from how you describe it hobojesus, I don't want to see it either!
But, as it turns out, a lot of R.E.M fans don't like the song, mainly because it's 'poppy', like the 1998 song 'Imitation of life', featured on the albums 'Reveal' and 'In time:1988-2003'.

But Shiny Happy People is a real turd of a song

And a real turd of a video. Honestly, I didn't know how they thought they would get away with writing a song that included the words 'Shiny Happy People Holding Hands'
