Hm, contradictory statement?

You have a level of logic on base of that of a 4 year old. Yes, Paris Hilton is stupid, congratulations - your power of observation is matched only by the power of your wit and outshined by your merciless tact.

Do we want to play - "Point Out the Individual and Base the Entire Country's Collective Attributions On Them" ?

I don't think you do.

Plus, how many Americans do you know personally? Every American I know, and I do know a few, knows where London is located. In fact, most of them can talk about it quite intelligently and at some length. How many Brits do you know that can talk about Washington D.C., beyond the point where they know that's where our capitol is and that there is a large White House there? Do the majority of Brits know which two states D.C. sits between? Serious question - I'm not assuming - I'm really asking this. Have your observation powers clued you into where this might be going?

Do not be a fool. Paris Hilton is not every American, in fact most of us despise her. If you judge the ignorance of a country's people based on the antics of a spoon-fed moron - then you are truly the ignorant one... that being said... Piss off, wanker.

bruise_violet 04-25-2006 11:46 AM

It's really not fair to stereotype a whole country based on one really lame example of a human, I agree. But I also don't think it's fair how some people think that everyone in Ireland is an alcoholic...

I like Britain, it has some very pretty places. I'd love to live in England some day.

maybe most people can't say much about washingston because there's not much to say, unlike with london, or for example new york, i'm sure most people know a lot more about new york than they do about washington.
and asking between which states washington is situated is like asking you in which county ( or other adminstrative unit that exists in england) london is situated. noone cares, we only look at the country as a hole, and most people know a hellova lot about the states.

that being said, i think it's very hypocritical of anyone to call the yanks stupid or ignorant. most nations on a whole are stupid and ignorant simply because the majority of the the people in this world are not very educated and are primarely focused on their own lives and how to get by, rather than knowing in which state washington is.

but you do suck in geography, as has been demostrated on this forum ( i'll never forget angie's statement that Cambodia is in Africa )...you should learn that shit in elemetary school.

Aye, some good points made... however, there is a lot to be said about Washington D.C., you saying that alone shows an ignorance (not stupidity, no, I can't even pronounce where you are from) that is commonplace in everyone at some point. For example with D.C. - it is the place that most modern philosophy of government was written and conceived (no, I'm not talking about the Bush administration, by modern I mean in the last 100 years) and these written ideas have been adopted world over - probably even in your own government. It is a place where much of the liberties everyone in the world enjoys were born. Once again- since apparently I have to point this out to avoid a ****storm - I know that other countries have made monumental contributions, too - however, we are talking about D.C. right now.

Once again, you are seeing a very, very small sect of Americans on this forum - most of the people on here are between 13-18, isn't angie like 14? It's easy to point out ignorance because when someone makes a mistake - it's quite apparent, however - when someone is correct about something - one doesn't even notice because it is in our realm of knowledge. It is suffice to say we all are taking for our own educations for granted.

Also geography is pretty sketchy subject to judge an American on - we have a lot more country to go over in our schools - America is the 3rd largest country, in landmass, in the world (second to Russia and Canada), England is pretty small - now I've never been to an English school for educational purposes, so I'm not sure how the teaching of geography is run there - but we try to cover our whole nation... and a logical assumption would suggest that the English can cover the whole of their nation, before we can cover the whole of ours. That being said, you get to move on to other countries a lot quicker than we do.

I've also heard that "Americans suck at learning languages" - this is false. The people on the European Continent have more of a reason to learn several languages than we do - you can drive for 4 hours and be in a whole other country, the majority of americans cannot drive 4 hours and even be out of their state!

Believe you me - if I could drive a few hours and be in Germany, I would be ecstatic! If I lived in England and could travel an hour or two to f*cking Ireland or Scotland or Wales... man I would be in heaven. You have the wonderful ability to see these historically and culturally rich places at a relatively cheap price in a short time.... I get to go to... Nebraska :(

i'm not judging an entire nation on what angie said, i've had lots of experiences like that, even with more intelligent people who simply don't pay attention to geography ( i would say that's because you really don't need to know anything about what's going outside your own country, including where a particular country is situated, the privilege of living in a rich country that is culturally very much focused on itself, i.e. the reluctance to watch films with subtitles comes to mind here ). this isn't specific only to america, i've had the privilege of hearing a french person say they don't know where or what Croatia is and we live on the same goddamn continent ( which isn't THAT big )....sad but true, the richer you are, apparently, the less you feel you need to know about the world....

and you have a point about learning languages, i've learned english out of necessity...it's incredibly difficult to learn a language you're not exposed to on a daily basis ( like i am with english, italian and spanish through tv ) and i don't blame you for not trying....i probably wouldn't either if i lived in ohio. but that's why i consider myself somewhat lucky to have been born in such a small country and with such a culturally diverse television program....i benefited from it immensly.....

Ok, then she also said that she doesn't understand the Southern accent (yes, I know that there are different accents in different areas in the South), along with the English and Scottish ones, when they are spoken quickly. Its still an accent from another country to her. Do you disagree with her on this? Would you say that you understand all accents when speaking English at high speed? Have you ever heard an excited Geordie?

I am have an immense jealousy in the fact that you are forced to learn other languages - the driving motivation for many Americans is just not there! I know French and a good chunk of Russian, but I had to pursue that out of offered educational programs. I think part of my personal problem with the America bashing is that I am unlike many Americans, and still am very patriotic... it's a sort of Catch-22. I have to deal with fellow countrymen making asses of themselves in various mediums (tv, newspapers, magazines, etc) all the time - but doesn't every country? I guess my problem is the instinctual herd mind of "Trend" - and a lot of things that foreigners pin on Americans are not attributes that are uniquely American - I often find it hypocritical, and I wonder how people dismiss their own ignorance!

I also don't hear Americans bash countries like I hear other countries bash each other - I don't know why there is this perpetual **** fight. It seems like foreigners take it personally if we don't know every thing about their country - or if we don't care. I guess my question is, why do YOU care so much about what we think? Which is like some sort of 5 year old just begging to get attention from an adult. If we meet an Englishman who doesn't know about America - we don't give a f*ck... we're like, OK - whatever... the average american doesn't take it personally.

I think the attitude of the average american, and I do not speak for all Americans is, "Why do you think we should care about your country?" While I don't follow this train of thought - it does beg an answer - and I'm sure they would be interesting ones...

and I didn't mean YOU as in individually YOU adidasss, I just meant in general.

well my man, i've become a down to earth realist as of late and like i said, i don't blame anyone for being ignorant, there are far more importaint issues than learning geography or following world affairs ( on a day to day basis ). people who know too much are usually the ones that have it good and have far too much free time on their hands.

i think people are a little bit pissed off by the american attitude " we are the best, fuck the rest" ( i don't think you can deny that that attitude exists ), noone likes arrogance ( even if it is the objective truth , or simply patriotism ). i know i'd be proud as hell to be an american, and would probably shove it in everyones face, just like i try to do with these little pluses of being a croatian , which is really pathetic.

and i think you hit the nail on the head with the child comparison, i think it really IS a desperate and pathetic need to be noticed. as a croatian poet once said "man, do not walk small underneath the stars", everyone feels the need to be considered special, to be noticed. that desire is especially present in people from smaller countries. by not knowing we exist, you somehow make us feel less importaint. and we want to be considered equally importaint as everyone else....( which of course isn't a realistic desire, but there you have it ).

i ,of course, am fully aware that i'm better than everyone else...:)

People have a right to be pissed off by that. If I heard one of my friends say that - I would quickly correct them. However, I still don't think it is an attribute uniquely American. Every country has a reason why they are better than another. Aussies call the English "Poms" - there is still tension between the Irish and English - between the various USSR broken up nations... the Serbs and the Croats have their reasons, no? Hell, even our north and south still have reasons why they think they are better...

I know that I, singularly, can not stop these thoughts and actions - but I wish I wouldn't have to deal with it on this forum... it's not necessary for a constant co(k of the walk contest between any two nationalities. The rampant UK v US threads are just begging for arguments that cannot be proven...

I will not forget my country nor culture, but I come to these forums merely as a human being. I think this should be a constant thought in everybody's mind. It would certainly make for a much more accepting world.

dog 04-26-2006 05:06 AM

music from britain in the 60s was great. i dont have a favourite country, its just a bunch of people, some good, some bad.

Sneer 04-26-2006 11:08 AM

Having family all over the UK and having visited them quite alot, i can safely say its my firm opinion that anywhere but London is a crap place to live. yes, we have nice hills and lakes...a few scenic hamlets and villages..and novelty monarchs. But seriously, the UK is a ****heap at the moment. with that said, i am still very patriotic and proud of my nationality. im not ashamed of how posh i sound or how "prude" (as someone put it) i am because at the end of the day, they are two traits that historically make the English distinct. I do howwever dislike the way we are seen as America's extra state...but the sad fact is we no longer are that powerful of a country.

Do you mean the English accent sounding posh in general, or just you? I personally sound suspiciously like **** Van-**** in Mary Poppins (although I don't tend to say cor-blimey that often). This is not a joke.

Chas'n'Dave are an extremely homely pair of musicians who play cheesy piano based music and 'knees up mother Brown' is just the kind of 'traditional party song' they would sing...
