swim 04-24-2006 06:43 PM

haha.

I like Britan more than America. It's just a plus that Britan has cool words.

adidasss 04-24-2006 06:58 PM

you want an honest opinion? up until i started talking to brits on this and other forums i didn't perticularly like you, purely based on your goverments policies regarding the Balkans. also, the brits , sadly, have shown the same level of ignorance towards foreign politics as the rest of the rich west and have shown a considerable level of arogance.

on te other hand, i love every british person i've ever met, love the music scene, the accents, the culture, the land ( one of my " must see before you die " places )....

explosions-in-my-pants 04-24-2006 07:02 PM

i like the way some birts sound when they talk.. and some just sound very snoty and some talk way to fast.. but where i am from newfound i can't judge on that cause in the whole of the english language we sound the worse.

See that's sterotyping in an unfriendly manner, and that is stupid not ignorant. Do you know the difference? Ignorant is choosing not to know, and stupid is just not knowing. So do you want to call me ignorant as well, because I'm not the one putting down entire cultures.

explosions-in-my-pants 04-24-2006 07:20 PM

i think canadians and americans are the best when it comes to speaking english in the sense that no matter how fast they talk you can more then likely understand them (unless there from the south). but people from Scotland and England and around those areas when they speak fast it all turns into one big ranbol of words to me that makes no sense what so ever.. almost like reading one of my post i guess.

swim 04-24-2006 07:23 PM

I'm sorry but you have no place demeaning the way people talk when you don't know the difference between your and you're or the difference between there their or they're.

and i know you meant southern accents because I'm from the south but my parents arent so I dont have a southern accent.

muppet 04-24-2006 07:27 PM

swim 04-24-2006 07:35 PM

represent bitches.

I especially thank BritIan for brit-pop and all their other kick ass music.

Crowe 04-25-2006 03:22 AM

I love the British and their culture, history, language, etc. I have a large amount of Brit friends from the International Camp at which I'm a counselor. Hell, I love the Isles in general!

What pisses me off is, what appears to be, a constant need to bash Americans whilst putting yourselves on some sort of exalted pedestal. I don't understand why you think it's needed? We don't come onto the forums and look for any chance we can get to discount the Brits. I know most Americans don't do this in their daily lives either. I do know that a lot of English folk will constantly go around and defame the American culture or nation at any given chance. I'm not stereotyping here, I've been told this by several English friends. While I understand our government may not please everyone, in fact it doesn't please most Americans, why must you project onto the citizens, especially ones on this board - where that should be a non-issue.

It's not like any other country has a spotless record when it comes to government related issues anyway, should we get into that? I don't think it's necessary.

As for the self deprecating American, I'm looking at you swim, you really have no idea how good you f*cking have it. And if you think that another country's music scene is a reason for you to bash your own country, then get the hell out. You are discounting the lives of millions upon billions of people that have come before you, and fought for your individual rights that changed the face of the world. I'm not saying that America is an better than anyone else, and those countries have had the same sacrifices - but if you don't respect ours - then you have the freedom to live somewhere else. Go.

However, America hating is trendy nowadays. So keep traveling with the herd, sheep.

EDIT: After reading this - I come off a bit angry - and I just wanna summarize it with...

Where's the love?

DontRunMeOver 04-25-2006 04:07 AM

Woah, well said Crowe! Yes, you did come off angry but the points you made were great. I've seen American-bashers use the excuse "you're the richest/most powerful country in the world, surely you can take a few insults", but can't really see how living in a rich country would make an individual person that much less offended by jokes at their expense.

I don't know who that Muppet user is or where they came from, but I'm guessing that (from the username) they've been the victim of a time-warp and are still stuck somewhere in the 90's, when people actually called each other Muppets.

The only type of America-bashing which I don't have personal issue with is that which non-Americans direct against the current US international policy. This is because there I see little evidence that the US government has been acting - internationally - for the wellbeing of anybody other than US citizens (which is reasonable enough as that's who votes them in, but is annoying for everybody else).

Explosions-In-My-Pants, the main reason that you find it easier to understand (Northern State) American and Canadian accents is that those are the ones you are most used to. They're the ones which you most frequently see on TV and are probably the ones most similar to your own accent too.

Have you ever heard a person with a southern accent speed talk?
Have you ever been to the south?

Don't assume. Usually people with a southern accent talk slow as hell.

littleknowitall 04-25-2006 08:28 AM

also don't assume 'the english accent' applies to 1 accent every 5 miles the accent is blody diffrent. same here.

bungalow 04-25-2006 08:30 AM

Take everything explosions says with a pinch of salt. She really doesn't know what she is talking about.

All she said was that she doesn't tend to understand what the English or Scottish are saying when they speak fast. That's not a particularly weird sentiment, to not understand an accent which is different to yours when its spoken quickly.
