Do you have/want a higher education?
I wanted to see what proportion on MB have and want (or not) higher education. Just answer the poll, will ya?
Feel free to post what you're doing. I'm working on my masters thesis in biology. To be a little more specific, it's on arctic ecology. |
I'll be doing a bachelor of communications/journalism, starting next feb of next year, hopefully. Money is going to be a big issue because I didn't earn enough to qualify for the government assistance. I should be able to struggle through though.
|
Still haven't got my degree (in Filmmaking), but when I get my diploma 2 years from now, I' planning to get my masters in sound engineering from Britain.
|
Working on it. In in my second year of a film & media/dramatic & fiction writing BA course, with a view to having a crack at the Master's course down the road in Manchester after that.
|
Have a law degree...
|
BA in communications with a cognate in Video Production.
|
I do, but I don't really use it.
I went for English/PoliSci (English was a mishmash of disciplines, PoliSci was American focused) I'm planning to go back for Econ. possibly in January, definitly by September. |
sat 3 highers at school, Biology, Art & Design and English
failed Biology which i was absolutely devastated about as i would like to work in the Biology field. Got a 'B' in art which i was really surprised about as i got told i would end up with a N/A by my teacher all year. failed english which never shocked me, as you's can see by my english its pretty much shit. i plan on going to college in January, then head to some Glasgow University to do Human Biology i think. I hope :(. |
if i can afford to go to college i probably will, but more than likely i'll just end up doing HVAC regardless of any education i get.
|
I have a first class degree in Biology and Genetics.
|
I'm declaring my major next semester.
English Education with a double minor in Philosophy and Theatre. |
Currently working on getting my AAS as a computer network specialist, plus an absurd amount of certifications. Ultimate goal is to get my CCIE, which only a relatively small amount of people in the US have been able to achieve, and is the holy grail of IT certifications.
The idea is to get a job in Houston for no less than 80K starting salary, which isn't too hard in the communications field. Especially with a CCIE. Screw paying for a college degree that isn't going to pay me back. |
I've got a Bachelor of Arts, I graduated from my degree last year. I was so excited about having a Bachelor's Degree, only to realise that my BA didn't really achieve anything career-wise for me.
So I'm currently working on a Postgraduate Diploma of Education (Secondary Teaching). Yay! |

I'd love to get a degree in some fancy artsy kinda thing, but I gotta go with what pays the bills. Life isn't free, regardless of whether you enjoy it or not. I just don't want to struggle, and I don't want my children to struggle. I want to make a good life for myself and my children (when I have some... I'm taking applications, btw.), and I don't think I'll be able to do that without a solid career plan. |
I wish I'd gotten a higher degree. Alas, I did too many drugs near the end of high school and early college (community college), and when I finally got my ass in gear I got an associates in graphic design. Been doing well with it, but could be doing better if I had a more advanced degree.
I also wish I'd put more thought into college and the future when I was in high school, and might be doing something higher-level altogether. Eh, such is life. I've considered going back to school, and I suppose it's never too late. But I have other things to accomplish first. |
does nobody feel like times running out in a way? i felt i had to post this question cos this is how i feel about my education. i feel like by the time i finally graduate, if i get into uni. then im goin to be well old and past it

I'm approaching the end of my third year of four in a Bachelor of software engineering.
I'm not sure whether I'll do a ME/PhD... there are some aspects of academia which discourage me and I guess it depends on whether I think I can contribute anything substantial to a field. I'm not even sure what I would specialise in yet. On the other hand, one of my lecturers recently headhunted me to work on his pet project over the summer so perhaps that would be a good opportunity to get a feel for research work? Regardless of whether I take it (it's a backup option), it's a weird feeling to be 'in demand' before I've graduated; a massive change from struggling to get a job as a teenager. :D |
I have an Associate's Degree (wah-waaah) in Liberal Arts (wah-waaah) with honors (wah-waaah).
I am currently unemployed. |
currently in my second year, BA in Architecture, tis no simple task.

And it just so happens that pretty much the only thing you can do with an artsy degree is to go into teaching... and luckily I'm cool with that. |

I just feel I can do whatever I want after I have an education.
I don't need to stay with what I studied, but at least I can get where I want to get in life. |

to be honest there's been quite many a time i've thought of dropping out or at least switching majors. really the only reason i chose to do this was to have a creative outlet(music was my first choice for schooling but my parents wouldn't have it. i can understand what they mean, considering how it's not the most viable for a steady life), but i'm really regretting it these days. idk, i talked to my parents about it, they're like "hey, try to finish this semester at least and pick something that won't be as demanding". i'm glad they understand, but at this point i don't even know if i'll make it to the end of the semester. sorry if i wasted your time with reading this, i just wanted to let it out, you know? |
been there, done that, got some fancy pieces of paper with less use that the stuff i wipe my butt with every morning.

really this is a career that you have to absolutely love from the start, it's not like other degrees where you get it and while you're not hyped about it you can still be able to do without any real qualms. this HAS to be your life. |
I appreciate everything biology has given me so far, I've learned a lot of things and gotten a lot of answers to fairly big questions I used to have. I am a bit worried about my future as a biologist, though. The reason I started was because I like the subject, I like science but also because I didn't want a typical 9 to 4 job. Biologists in theory could do field work that takes them to Africa or many other places. I did my fieldwork up in the arctic which and I think I experienced a lot up there which most don't.
However, by far most of my time seem to be spent reading articles and spending countless hours doing labwork which is extremely boring to say the least :( I've always been a restless person and that 9 to 4 office job seems to be looming. It's made me reconsider if I really want to do science (I'd then get a PhD) or if I should do something else. I've come to the conclusion I might do ped for a year so I can work as a teacher so I can use that as a fallback plan, then just stop with biology after my masters is done and see if I can get a job. My dream would be moving back to the south where I come from and get a job there with monitoring some kind of population, like salmon or mink - the first has commercial value and the other is a pest .. something that would frequently take me outside. Then I could perhaps do some part time teacherin' if need be. |

I just got an offer to travel to Antarctica as a field assistant (help gather invertebrates), but I had to turn it down cause it was 3 months and I'm too busy with things here .. >.< |
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design and I'm currently enrolled in a web design and development certificate program that's pretty extensive and almost like getting another half a degree or something. Well, maybe more like a quarter of a degree. At any rate it's keeping me pretty busy.

Coming to the end of a BA in History and Philosophy. Pretty interesting, even if I don't think History is the field for me.
|
I'm 20 years old and in my third year of study as a Music major. Working on a minor in Political Science as well. I've probably got another 2 years left - another 1.5 years at least - before I get my B.A., or if I can get my grades just a little higher, a B.Mus with a B.A. in Political Science if I take a couple of Law courses.
At the moment I'm really torn about what to do after I graduate. There's basically three options that I'm considering, all with pros and cons financially and time-wise. The first, and most likely to happen, is moving on to another university to do a one-year study period to get a Bachelor of Education, and possibly a Master's degree, and then become a teacher in the school system. The second is Law school. I've been seriously considering this for about a year now based on all the courses I've taken and how I could apply a music degree to a career in law. I've taken some mock LSAT tests over the past several months and passed them all. The third is to continue on to regular grad school and simply get a Master of Music degree (M.Mus). Would love to get that degree at a reputable school like Juilliard, the Manhattan School, or some kind of secondary degree from Berklee. All those choices are expensive for me since I'm not an American citizen, but they're all viable options. Most likely I'll probably stay here. If I get a Master's degree, I could work on a Ph.D and become a professor or something. If I want to go to school in the US, most likely just grad school, do I need to take the SAT test? Edit: I probably just bored you all with my life plans! |
BA, MA, PhD anthropology
which, of course, i am not using... |
So what are you doing, then? Did you just grab a phd for ****s and giggles?
I have a BS in Genetics and will be starting grad school next fall for a PhD in molecular genetics. Right now I do research on plants but I would like to study something more medically related for my PhD. I won't ever be making mad cash but what I do interests me and I have total freedom to come in whenever I feel like it and total freedom to do whatever experiment pops into my head as long as I get my work done. |
well i moved to another country for a girl shortly after finishing my degree, and just never found something in my field...
i still dabble. i've given a few talks, and am slowly working on a book. i'll get back into it one of these days! |
