Bitrate Challenge Nr. 3 - Lossy vs. Lossless

Bitrate Challenge Nr. 3 - Lossy vs. Lossless

In this test, we're simply gonna see if MB is good at identifying which of two files is a high bitrate lossy and which is lossless. The answer can be given by answering the thread's poll. This poll is anonymous, but if you're not shy with your answer, feel free to give it in the shape of a post.

How to do it

Visit this webpage (try IE if other browser doesn't work) : Bitrate Challenge Round 3

Listen to the two sound clips there. Identify which one is the higher quality file (Track 1 or Track 2), then answer in this thread's poll (without looking at what the others have chosen in the poll).

Optional : Also post your answer in a post. :)

This is actually going be harder than the previous one.
From 192kbps and up not every sound seems as sensitive to compression.
In some music it's a no brainer, in some music is isn't.
E.g. heavy metal is really easy. There's so much 'sound' in that music, that you'll easily find a frequency that 'misses' or sounds distorted.
We'll see :)

They definitely sound different, can't decide which one is better yet :)

what plug-ins do I need for those players? They aren't working for me.

Guybrush 02-04-2011 04:37 PM

Yes, I can keep making these tests in as many steps as I can and I figured making this an easy two files comparison, I could make it even easier by making people answer a poll. This makes the results come in by themselves!

If I decide it might be interesting comparing lossless to lower BR lossys, I can make a thread for that as well sometime in the future. :)

Dang, was hoping the answer would be none. Have you tried internet explorer? I think it just uses windows media player.

WMPlayer. Use IE (I didn't like that either)

They sounded the same to me but I went with one.

hehem, today I noticed I had forgotten to write down which was which, so I reset the poll and redid the wavs. I had date created and so on to give me clues and there weren't many votes, but I just couldn't risk being wrong about it!

Sorry to those who have voted so far, your votes have been wiped. I'd love it if you could redo it! It won't happen again, I promise. :p:

are you sure you have the right ones tagged this time before I do it again?
