If moderators see someone who they feel is breaking the rules, I simply want moderators to be courteous when pointing it out to that person in private, and also when discussing it openly on the Boards, if dealing with the issue publicly is necessary.

I've seen many instances of moderators being patient, helpful, and considerate. When they write discourteously to or about other members, then that's the behavior I want changed. I'm not against "interference." I want polite interference.

Well, from what I recall, I was nothing but polite to Slappy during his time here. And yet I'm still the bad guy to him. And I was nothing but polite to you for ages until one day you decided to stick the knife in. I guess when you're a mod there's really nothing you can do that's going to make certain people happy. Disappointing but true.

Oh for goodness sake.

There's a world of difference between asking someone to stop trolling a thread and actually calling them a troll.

Oh and just so you're not unprepared. If I see you pull a stunt like posting a spammers links on their behalf or jumping into 'rescue' someone who's be asked politely to stop causing trouble (Like what happened with Janszoon and another mod in Slappy Jenkins thread) you WILL be getting an infraction.

Being nice to people doesn't make you above the rules.

Have a nice day.

I think everyone should just take some time out to put their tampons back in. Please.

This has been going on for like 8 years.

One thing I've understood is that few mods here are at all able to take any form of criticism. And not just now. I noticed this in my fellow mods when I was on the team. Some people, when faced with criticism, will think something along the lines of "perhaps there is something I can do to improve the job I do around here". Generally speaking, our mod team is more likely to act scared and defensive. Vanilla f.ex, when confronted by members who think she acts like a bit of a bitch, responds first with mocking those who complain. Then, instead of changing for the better, she decides to wear her bitchyness like a badge, proudly proclaiming how she hurts feelings and how little she cares for the complaining cry-babies. So telling her she behaves badly only motivates her to behave worse. Faced with this, the other mods seem to do nothing but protect her rights to act however she wants, as if there are no standards. As if mods need to be protected from any criticism or as if they're too tired with this place to give a shit.

Vanilla is spectacularly bad at coping with any sort of negative feedback, but it's not just her. A sort of butthurt, defensive attitude is what we usually see. Or mockery, a bit like this thread. Sometimes, mods will point out that they actually have to delete a lot of spam and stuff and act like this somehow justifies acting like a baby now and then. But members shouldn't accept that argument because deleting spam is a very simple job. I know because I've done it, many times. It's nothing to brag about. The real job when it comes to modding is not how you deal with spam, it's how you deal with people. And that's something some of you are not that good at. A willingness to admit that and deal with it in a way which isn't just an all-out defensive knee-jerk reaction would be very refreshing. A unwillingness to go blindly along with / support other mods when they act like dicks would also be refreshing.

We know you're not paid to do the job you do, but does that mean you're above criticism? Where is your idealism? What is your motivation? If you no longer have a real want - a personal engagement in you - to make MB a nice, friendly community, perhaps you should step down and let someone else have a go at it instead. The more posts I read, the more careless I feel the mods are and the more it looks like the desire to make a difference here has burnt out in them. When I felt like that, I stepped down, but I think some of those on the team today may just be continuing as mods out of habit.

I can't speak for everyone, but I think a lot of mods are willing to listen to criticism and willing to change their approach if need be. I certainly am. The problem comes when you start to realize that the person making the criticism is never going to be happy no matter what you do. It's also an issue when the criticism is negative rather than constructive (for example calling Vanilla names as you have just done). The criticism has been leveled that the mod team is generally not diplomatic enough with people who break the rules, that's a fair criticism and a reasonable thing to discuss, but I wish people with complaints would try to be the change they want to see and approach the conversation with as much diplomacy as they would like to see from the mod team.

I got told I was being bullying the other day, just for explaining to someone what the rules are.
If anything this whole touchy feely crap has gone too far.

I'm not saying we're perfect but it's getting to the point now where we are doing this stuff people want and they STILL take the sides of the people causing the trouble.
Basically we can't win

So you try to call me out by calling me a bitch and expect me to be happy about it?

Tore you have no idea what I do as a mod. You're not behind the scenes anymore so stop pretending like you're in the know. You might see me being defensive, but that's because certain people make big accusations when they actually have no idea what they're talking about.

I think everyone's taking everything way too seriously, this has snowballed into something of a monster. So excuse me while I take my tampon out (hehe thanks Kay xx) and chillax in the real world.

Oh and p.s. the 'I hurt feelings' is a rap lyric to make light of the drama that goes on here, because no matter what I say, someone is going to kick a stink about it or be offended on behalf of someone.

Trollheart 03-11-2013 06:43 PM

Personally I think the tagline in Vanilla's avatar is ironic, because she usually goes out of her way to protect people's feelings, from what I can see. Just as someone on the outside lookin' in that is; I don't know what goes on in that secret hut in the backwoods of Canada where you meet and there's a big sign up saying "Mods only" (leading, I believe to some confusion in the eighties when Sting and the cast of Quadrophenia turned up and couldn't understand why they weren't being allowed in!) and that's guarded by four bio-enhanced bears --- oops! I've said too much, haven't I? ;) :shycouch:
