I've recently been watching the **** out of Kill La Kill. A lot of people hate it due to the ridiculous amount of fan service, but I call these people philistines who don't know how to detect subtext. In all fairness though, this is the main character's "battle uniform"...
Spoiler for Pretty sure NSFW:
But the fan service is so ridiculous, so over-the-top, but also so self-aware that I can only conclude that it's all one big joke that actually good naturedly deconstructs the concept of fan service. That aside, the characters are amazing, the plot is far more interesting than the vast majority of more restrained anime, the art design is gorgeous and ambitious, and it's just one of the most fun anime series I've ever seen. It's pretty much a love letter to anime in general, and as such is the most anime thing to ever be anime. Unlike most fan service shows Kill La Kill shows massive amounts of influence from Neon Genesis Evangelion, Berserk, Sailor Moon, high school dramas of all types, and... god knows what else. For example, the main villain I can only describe as the love child of Sir Integra from Hellsing and Griffith from Berserk, with all of the thundering badassness that that implies. This is all set to a backdrop of a cyberpunk version of 1984, with a setting that feels like Minas Tirith was designed by Hideaki Anno (director of Evangelion) using an animation team from Studio Ghibli. If you don't like the excesses of anime already then you probably won't like this show, but if you have a soft spot in your heart for that **** then this should be your new favorite show. 1. Death Note 2. Cowboy Bebop 3. Neon Genesis Evangelion 4. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood 5. One Punch Man 6. Berserk 7. One Piece 8. Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z 9. Hellsing Ultimate 10. Full Metal Panic 11. Hunter x Hunter 12. Sailor Moon 13. Vision of Escaflowne 14. Yu-yu Hakusho 15. Azumanga Daioh 16. Tenchi Muyo 17. Record of Lodoss War 18. Black Lagoon 19. Slayers 20. Mushishi 21. Soul Eater 22. Trigun ------------------------------------------ Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (10) JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (8) Bubblegum Crisis (7) Elfen Lied (7) Monster (7) FLCL (6) Detective Conan (5) Steins;Gate (5) Ouran High School Host Club (5) Gintama (3) Kino's Journey (3) Paranoia Agent (3) Bleach (3) Gunbuster (3) Haven't You Heard? OMG the more I watch Kill La Kill the more fun it becomes. Quite possibly a top ten anime series.

I've never seen Sword Art Online, but I've heard horror stories. You should check out Log Horizon for an anime about an MMO that is at least not so polarizing. It deals with both fantasy and MMO's in a way that might actually be deconstructionist to both genres.
The abridged SAO series at the very least is ****ing amazing. DBZ abridged good.
