Some of their material is no doubt industrial, some of it is more arguable. I don't think it's a black and white issue with NIN.

kinda yeah. i mean, i would say NIN definitely have some industrial songs but their catalogue doesn't really stay true to any sort of industrial metal approach.

also i don't think people here like NIN despite the fact that Downward Spiral is a goddamn masterpiece i tell ye

It seems to me like they are industrial, but people are upset because they don't rate them, so they aren't REAL industrial, if you get me.

The issue is that the idea people have of industrial is almost like a gothier techno or something, which is not what industrial is. NIN was influenced by bands that were already not exactly industrial. And even beyond that, industrial is a very nebulous concept created by disparate bands who were basically just experimenting with noise, didn't have any unified genre sound, and were liable to chuck last year's sound with every album, so even deciding what is and is not industrial is more of a judgement call than with most genres.

The simplest definition I have for industrial is "palm muted riffs plus techno beats", but that's probably simplifying it far too much.
