Thanks. Hardly anyone mentions me in these things, and I never win (except for plug that one time), so getting nom'd means the world to me.

I loved reading Peanuts as a kid. I'm a of Calvin and Hobbes, but never heard of tintin.

I don't know if you are looking for recommendations, but let's say hypothetically you asked me I would hypothetically say The Greatest of Marlys or Fun House by Linda Barry and/or Supreme Blue Rose by Ellis Warren, illustrated by Tula Lotay. Linda Barry approach to drawing is like outsider art and I find her (her characters and the things they say) hilarious. Tula Lotay is an amazing artist. The way she draws, & her choice of colors. The use of water color gives it almost a dream-like effect. Their artwork are so completely opposite, but I'm a big fan of both.

I just read it, it's all right. But to be honest, it doesn't nearly have the humour or emotional depth of the other comics I know
And Nea, thanks for the recommendations, I will check those out too!

:yikes:

TinTin has been super-big in Europe for decades, though he was always too cleancut, too dated for my liking. His stories were a bit like Scoobie-Doo, but without the dog and without the jokes. The fact that Spielberg would spend time and money on an animated TinTin movie says more about Spielberg's lack of inspiration than it does about TinTin's merits imo.

Anyway, here's a straightforward intro that will bring you up to speed if you are interested:-

The Batlord 10-11-2019 05:54 AM

Yeah nobody gives a **** about Tintin in America nor do we even remember it existing.

Marie Monday 10-11-2019 05:56 AM

What are you guys talking about. Tintin is dated in some ways, but funny as hell, and the drawings are fantastic

The Batlord 10-11-2019 06:00 AM

No I mean Tintin is so culturally irrelevant in America that his existence has been forgotten by at least the last two generations. Probably three, possibly four.

Marie Monday 10-11-2019 06:02 AM

Yeah I believe that, I was reacting more to Lisna

The Batlord 10-11-2019 06:06 AM

I mean you do read Peanuts so that doesn't give me confidence in your ability to recognize dated lameness.

Marie Monday 10-11-2019 06:10 AM

Oh I certainly recognize the datedness. I'm just able to look through that and see the value underneath

Even lame-o's who read Peanuts know Calvin and Hobbes is what's up.

The Batlord 10-11-2019 06:19 AM

Bitch probably lol's hard at Family Circus.

Marie Monday 10-11-2019 06:23 AM

Calvin and Hobbes is genuinely funny. Peanuts often isn't, but there is a very accurate feeling of despair underneath those comics which I love

^ Sorry Marie. I didn't mean to offend you. Yes, as cartoons go, Tintin has good artwork and a kind of innocent period charm about it. If there was nothing better on tv (which was often the case for Brit tv in the sixties) I used to watch it and enjoyed the bits with Captain Haddock and the Thompson twins.

Actually no, back when the internet didn't matter people actually had opinions about comic strips because they were still relevant. This is more a case of you being too young to understand.

Don't worry, you didn't offend me :)
Tintin as a cartoon is lame though, I never liked that either. The comics feel very different to me

Those are all great. This one is not about the humour, but I remember it fondly:

The Batlord 10-11-2019 04:45 PM

Bro, Watterson's Sunday strips were jaw dropping. He would basically force newspapers to give him as much space as he wanted and he'd use it to create pure visual magic.

Absolutely. I had totally forgotten about that Calvin and Susie playing husband and wife one

Marie Monday 10-11-2019 05:03 PM

And in defense of peanuts, here is one which I recall standing out to me due to actually being quite funny. And there's just a lot of truth in it

I hope they don't disappoint. Not sure if you know about this one, but another comic I was going to mention was Bloom County, just for Opus and Bill the Cat.

I don't know how good the movie is or the motivation behind Spielberg decision to make it. I just imagine he had enough money and clout to make anything he wants. So I wonder if he doing it cause he knows there is a market for it, or cause TinTin meant something to him.

The one thing I remember from watching that video was how Thompson Twins came up with their name. Since it's obvious the three of them are not twins, and none of them have the last name of Thompson. They name themselves after "the incompetence detectives, Thompson and Thompson."

I don’t like Bloomsbury or whatever that other **** is called. Every time Charlie Brown wants to play baseball it rains. That’s the dope jam.
