Is this Universal....?

Marie Monday 06-06-2021 05:58 AM

No, not at all. Humour depends a lot on culture and differs enormously between generations, countries, social circles etc. I find none of this funny for instance

DianneW 06-08-2021 05:04 PM

so how come...beer cans scarecrow all light hearted stuff....your weird or an alien then..show what is funny to you,,ok I do larf a hell of a lot and see most stuff that is serious as funny these days...Marie..nice name

The Batlord 06-08-2021 05:18 PM

You have lame boomer humor. We are young and rowdy and cynical except we don't hate our wives.

Why do you speak in the first person plural like you are the Borg?

@DianneW He doesn't hate his wife cause he isn't married.

Chula Vista 06-08-2021 06:24 PM

This tickled real good.

It's light hearted, but that's not the same as funny. I think the main reason it's not funny to me is that humour generally needs an element of surprise, the unexpected. These jokes don't do that for me, they're trite.

As for what's funny to me, my occasional posts in the spam and meme threads should give you an idea but if I come across a good example I'll post it here

Actually, here is one (although not mine):

where is the surprise?..ducks fly no surprise ok gate damaged, so that's the joke... had ducks in the UK and had to clipped their wings, as they were not bought up in the wild, so pets, special pets, although when they bred one of our chickens sat for the duration of, to hatching then we took over....

Jokes to me are so varied..take the UK CarryOn films..loads and loads of them, funny to me as is the late Kenny Everett....when you can laugh at yourself though your a winner....that's is not so easy really.

DianneW 06-09-2021 02:30 PM

People completely missed the sick joke over the beer can scare crow..all about how man is destroying the land....Jokes come in many forms and you have decided you know my humour from just a couple of examples....no way, never been that shallow.

wut, I never said such a thing
Don't take the surprise thing too literally, it's hard to explain but in the case of the duck example I mean the connection between the picture and the correlation vs. causality principle is apt but surprising and just the right amount of absurd. There are many exceptions to that though, like you said humour comes in many forms. And I agree that laughing at yourself is great and very important

Think Marvel Universe + Angry Duck.

The scarecrow/litter one I wouldn't label a joke if it was multiple choice.
Much more satire imo.

This is funny.

The sheer amount of "wife bad" cartoons you post mark you clearly as a boomer.

Marie Monday 06-09-2021 03:53 PM

Well that's true, except misogynist teenage boys probably like wife bashing jokes too

rostasi 06-09-2021 04:23 PM

Comedy is definitely universal - take America, for instance.

I liked the Marie/Frownland one about Correlation VS. Causation. It's a joke at the expense of people like me who are quite capable of mixing the two up.

Yes, absolutely agree that to laugh at yourself is very commendable. In fact, Arthur Koestler, who struggled (as a Jewish communist) to survive in Nazi-occupied Europe once commented that one of the remarkable features of the Nazi's was their lack of humour regarding themselves. They took themselves far too seriously in his opinion. I sometimes wonder about QAnon or the Taliban; would Koestler find them short on humour too?

I thought that was pretty good, but then I understand exactly the different ways we can use toss/tosser in English. Perhaps other people don't, which brings me to my last point:-

If we want to explore how universal humour is, this might be a better place to begin:-

I bet kids the world over could find that funny and even I can enjoy how cleverly choreographed it is.

If a person wears a mask in a car, alone or not, the face mask is still performing its function filtering out noxious car exhaust fumes that might leak into his or her car especially if the window is open and there's heavy traffic. I like to see that guy in a head on collision with an 18 wheeler and see if that seat belt still performs its function. This is such a false equivalency. Maybe that is where the joke lies in the irony of a false equivalency?

Nobody got it because tosser doesn't mean the same over there (possibly doesn't mean anything) as it does here, so no joke. Clever, but the correlation between the wording and the picture goes over their heads. I thought it was mildly funny, but not hilarious, but that's because I know what a tosser is.

Come on, Dianne! It makes it look as if the duck has bent the bars of the gate and walked through. That's why it's funny.

So you've answered your own question there. No, comedy is NOT universal, though sometimes something is just naturally funny, like someone slipping on ice or walking into a door. Even if we want to tell ourselves oh no, we're horrible people if we laugh at that, it's our first instinct to do so.

But comedy varies not only by country but also by person. You might think something is hilarious and I would not, and vice versa. It's all subjective, so it can hardly be universal.

Quick poll: who finds this funny?

Problem with that is what if the person isn't a Nazi, and you just punched an innocent person, cause in your head you think he is a Nazi. You then just become the very Nazi you're against.

Punching the wrong guy does not make you an ethno-nationalist. Stop using trite nonsense you got from Saturday morning cartoons.

It is funny to me in my Country, and just for example, people here are wearing masks not just in cars, you drive along the Lanes literally no one around in and an area of complete calm and out of nowhere a jogger appears masks and all...you get to the supermarket and the social events start, first people are passing out the IN door and talking and laughing and see nothing of the NO entry signs, ...you have to see them to believe it so that is why I find it humorous...hey even the kiss greetings are happening as par the norm..gotta take the mask off first though....it is the same to me as tongue in cheek...I don't drink and drive..going to just spill it..same as ....

all had a humorous idea.... but basically they were telling you something that people just see what they wanna see in There World, not anybody else's world, generally speaking we are all different in a lot of ways, not just humour either......
So I know my humour is mostly nobody else's a lot of the time..My husband laughs because he is an OTT joker born and bred and that over time has turned me into a fruitcake also...My Mother refused to allow him to make a speech at My late Dad's funeral because he could, not that he would, but he could have made a joke out of grief even..........:wavey:

yeah your right though about jokes etc., it is not really universal but we can all laugh at bad stuff as well as good.....just not necessarily the same thing...one day it seem hilarious and another day WTF...life aye...
p.s. yes the sketch was funny, he has been in so many progs. was good in Holby City a Hospital Drama could have been a real drama having read this a while back..is it funny well not exactly, but made me grin...

DianneW 06-10-2021 02:51 AM

Was not saying otherwise and not trying to make a joke out of a tosser, just using it in the tense it was meant for, highlighting a huge trash problem, now take this video, this fun and funny and a lot more to me but it's all in the eye of the beholder of course, that is why people cross and fall out, lack of understanding each other's syke. I hate curry, does that mean all people do...different types of curries, but I hate them all....well in my head I do hate them, as not actually had more than 1 in my life....my judgement.

She does do these type's of Video....
