Good work, Saulaac - I would've never guessed Toto - "Africa".

I've been banging my head against the wall on Song #6 also. Ouch.

I believe Mastercard and Visa are widely accepted in Ireland. TH, any more lines for us?

Yeah it’s a toughie, ribbons.

“Surely there must be a chivalrous person riding a horse breathing fire?” I can't tell who is breathing the fire? The cavalier/knight or the horse

Kinda gives a Return to Forever ‘Romantic Warrior’ vibe, but that’s an instrumental album. Oh well, TH please help us with another snippet!

Song 6 is :banghead:
Any chance you could add another couple of lines? Do you accept mastercard or visa?

Well done. Didn't think anyone would get that. Can't add any more lines to the last one though, as it's the chorus and that would give it away. I suppose I can do another verse but I doubt it will help, probably make it tougher. If you want a hint I can give you that.

Look at the line about gods and demigods and see if that clicks with ya. You're the one who always gets it from one line and I think that might be the one to clinch it for you.

Trollheart 01-20-2023 04:34 AM

Do you guys want to give up on the last song so I can post the next round? Or are you still working on it?

Does anyone know the location of a place where there are no bad men and also divine beings?
Can someone point me in the direction of a demigod who is well known in the neighbourhood and who will take on all comers?
Surely there must be a chivalrous person riding a horse breathing fire?
In total darkness I am restless and fantasise about my requirements.

"Holding Out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler!

That was a close one, TH. I almost threw the towel in. "Late at night, I toss and I turn" was the clincher.

Ribbons and y'all, prepare for Trollheart's fiercest round yet! :shycouch:

Hey well done! Thought the "streetwise Hercules" would give it away, but nice. You see why I couldn't do the next line.

Okay, round 8 coming up shortly.

Haha. “streetwise Hercules” is original and hilarious, as was your take on it. I can just imagine “streetwise Hercules” being said in the voice of Pauline Calf, followed by “ooh, wasn't he was a naughty bugger”

Thanks for dreaming up all these lyrics, TH - not easy to do!

Trollheart 01-20-2023 06:39 PM

Round 8

Song 1

Refrain from altering yourself in order to gain my approval:
You have always been very dependable up to nowm
And dream not of becoming commonplace to the extent that I wish no longer to lay eyes upon you.
Arriving where we are would have been impossible had I departed from you when things got rough;
For better, for worse, I accept you for what you are.

Answer: "Just the Way You Are" by Billy Joel

Song 2

At the beginning terror took hold of me, i was figuratively turned to stone as I wondered how I would go on alone.
However, after I had passed many nights considering your crimes my resolved strengthened and I discovered the power to exist without you.
And you have returned from beyond the stars;
I merely entered to encounter you here with an expression of remorse on your countenance.
Why did I not take appropriate security measures?
Why did I not demand back your method of ingress?
I would have done, had I been aware for even one moment you would return and be a nuisance to me.

Answer: "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor

Song 3

The highway is deserted, as is the strand;
It's palpable; autumn is on the way.
A lake that is vacant, as are the streets:
Sunset is unattended.
Passing your residence in my car despite the fact that I am aware you are not there.

Answer: "The Boys of Summer" by Don Henley

Song 4

Considering all that has passed between us you should be better attuned to my feelings, as I am to yours.
I am aware that good and evil are not at all the same thing.
But I have no intention of being a homewrecker.
Settle down if I walk in after my usual time,
For conflict between us makes us look like immature people of a younger age than we are.

Answer: "If You Don't Know Me By Now" by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes

Song 5

It's probably come as something of a surprise to you that I'm aware of your intentions to leave me
For another man of your past acquaintance, but you know I have more affection for you than he has;
I confess I was shocked myself when just recently the news was made known to me.

Answer: "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye

Song 6

Ah, existence exceeds your size and we are not the same.
How far I will take things, the measurement of space in your gaze.
Oh dear, I have spoken more than I had expected to:
I have arranged it.

Answer: "Losing My Religion" by REM

ribbons 01-20-2023 09:01 PM

Song 1

Billy Joel - "Just The Way You Are"

Song 6

REM - "Losing My Religion"

Now off to wonder about the rest.

ribbons 01-20-2023 09:17 PM

Song 3 just came to me...

Don Henley - "Boys of Summer"

Quote:

The highway is deserted, as is the strand;
It's palpable; autumn is on the way.
A lake that is vacant, as are the streets:
Sunset is unattended.
Passing your residence in my car despite the fact that I am aware you are not there.

The bolded lines sprang to mind:

"Empty lake, empty streets / The sun goes down alone. / I'm driving by your house though I know you're not at home."

I WILL SURVIVE! (Gloria Gaynor)

See bolded lines. "I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face / I should have changed that stupid lock / I should have asked you for your key / If I'd have known for just one second you'd be back to bother me."

These songs come to me in the oddest moments. I was just dozing off after a long day, then presto: TH's lines about "the expression of remorse on your countenance" and "security measures" and "method of ingress" and I WILL SURVIVE woke me with a start.

Back to sleep now...

“If you Don't Know Me By Now” - Teddy Pendergrass

Settle down if I walk in after my usual time --> Oh don't get so excited when I come home a little late at night

This may well be my 'soul' contribution in this round.

Very well done!

Funny, TH's line about "no intentions of being a homewrecker" had me thinking vauguely of a song that had a "breaking up our happy home" reference, but I just couldn't solve it.

Trollheart 01-21-2023 09:00 PM

Well done. Some big stuffed cuddly toy may very well have sung it, but I only know it as Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes (original) and the Simply Red cover. But be that as it may, yes, it is indeed that song.

You guys really want to work me hard, dont'cha? What is there left - one, is it? Luckily I have up to round 12 prepared.

ribbons 01-21-2023 09:37 PM

Yes, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes recorded it, with Teddy Pendergrass singing lead.

I had no idea that Simply Red covered it. Will have to look that up.

Yes “homewrecker” looked useful. But then I had an image of Miley Cyrus hanging off a giant ball. Assumed it was not that song but I couldn’t un-think it!

Nope, nor did he record the original version. That honor goes to Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Gladys Knight and the Pips also had a big hit with this before Gaye's version came out. Not as smooth as Gaye's version and probably the rockingest song the Pips ever did.

Okay, thanks RS.
Yeah that Motown sound was good.

I had grape hopes that Saulaac would solve Song 5.

Also love Creedence Clearwater Revival's version of that tune.

Trollheart 01-23-2023 11:38 AM

Yes I sought out the original after hearing Mick's version. I think the Bluenotes one is superior. Similar to how when they had a hit with "Every Time We Say Goodbye" I went looking for Ella's version, and it slays.

ribbons 01-23-2023 02:19 PM

Beautiful song, and I've never heard it before - so thanks for mentioning it. Ella slays most things she sings.

You've got me listening to her now, covering Harry Nilsson's "Open Your Window".
"We could be happy alone in a tent, / Think of the money we'd save on rent." :)
Wonder how you'd rewrite that lyric, TH.
* ponders alternative word for 'tent' *

Since you started this thread, I am constantly rethinking lyrics in my head.

Edit: Ella's scatting is untranslatable. ;)

Interesting thing, over here we have a mock song which links both your posts.
It goes
"We all live in a green and yellow tent
Some people think we're bent
Cos we live in a tent."

(Bent is Irish/UK slang for gay by the way)

Okay, okay! Next round coming up real soon.

Trollheart 01-24-2023 02:41 PM

Round 9

Song 1

It's clear by the manner in which I stride that I am a lover of ladies with very little time to converse
Very audible melodies and ladies who are not cold, it has been a struggle for the singer of this song since the day of my birth.
And at this moment things are fine, they're great and you can choose to avoid my gaze
We may endeavour to gain knowledge of the effect on the male of the species of an American newspaper produced in the Big Apple.

Answer: "Stayin' Alive" by The Bee Gees

Song 2

On this day they will return it to you and by now surely you understand your task?
I'm of the belief that nobody feels as I do about you at this moment.
A certain type of rhythmic structure, gossip in the neighbourhood that the flame inside you has been extinguished
Something, I feel certain, which is not new to your ears, nor did you ever have cause to disbelieve it.
I'm of the belief that nobody feels as I do about you at this moment.
And no path upon which we walk is straight
Every illumination showing the way is so bright it hurts our eyes
I have much I would converse with you about but I am unable to articulate my speech.

Answer: "Wonderwall" by Oasis

Song 3

The happy look on her face brings to mind, it appears to me, joyous recollections of my childhood
Where all was new and a certain shade of azure like the heavens above.
Oftentimes, on occasions on which I behold her visage
I am transported by her to a distant place with which I have a particular affinity
And should I remain gazing at her for too extended a space of time I might weep.

Answer: "Sweet Child o' Mine" by Guns'n'Roses

Song 4

I arise and little depresses me
You are struggling through bad times and I know what they're like, seen many bad ones myself, some worse than yours.
I understand how it is for you
You have to perform the moves of a stuntman in order to achieve what is genuine
Are you able to discern me in an upright position facing away from the wurlitzer?
You're observed worse I'm sure, you catch my drift?

Answer: "Jump" by Van Halen

Song 5

A gentleman proceeds down the avenue asking the question “why is it that I am not as hard in my centre, why is it I am not as hard in my center as my existence certainly is?
What I require is a chance to stand in front of a camera and a chance at salvation
I have no desire to end up like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, interred alongside such creatures.”
Excavator of human remains, excavator of human remains
Canines silhouetted by that light which only rises at night
Much distant in the adequately-illuminated portal to my home
The name perhaps of a man who drinks too much, drinks too much
Remove these dogs from my presence!
I am no longer amused at these antics.

Answer: "You Can Call Me Al" by Paul Simon

Song 6

Uncertainy grips me as I grasp hold of you and conduct you to the area where we will waltz
As the sound of the music fades, there is that in your eyes which reminds me of a movie
Shadowed with morose farewells.
Never shall I dance again, feet which are not innocent cannot follow the dance steps
It's not difficult to imagine all is otherwise however I know you are intelligent enough to see through this facade.
It would have been a far more profitable move had I not been untrue with a companion
And thrown away the opportunity that had been afforded me
Therefore never shall I dance again as I danced when I was in your company.

Answer: "Careless Whisper" by George Michael

Saulaac 01-24-2023 04:03 PM

Going solely (soul-ly) on memory so I don't know all the words but I reckon I got the easiest two.

Another one from the memory vault.

"Never shall I dance again, feet which are not innocent cannot follow the dance steps" / "No I'm never gonna dance again, those guilty steps which got no rhythm" (or something like that). Followed by that sax solo in the chorus.
