Songs About Nowhere Towns

Maybe it's because I grew up in one, but I like songs slamming such towns. As Big Black say in the following tune "never anything to do in this town/but stare at each other and wait til we die":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXV6EmSBULY

And then there's Johnny Cougar, the pre-fame John Mellencamp, who didn't exactly praise the virtues of a "Small Town":

And then there's one from Elton John--"there's nothing to steal/so there's not a great deal of crime":

I know a number of other such songs. I'm curious to see what ones others can come up with.

Only one song came to my mind when I saw this chat.

God bless you and Mason and his grandparents always!!!

That song is exactly what I'm talking about. Except for driving through once to get somewhere else, I have never returned to the nowhere town I grew up in after my parents moved away.

Are those Mason's real grandparents in the video?

OK, I'm a bit curious about young Mr. Ramsey's music now. I will definitely check out his cover of Lovesick Blues.

SweetHeartHolly 03-06-2025 05:33 PM

^^^ Yes, Mason is with his grandparents in that video. His granddad's name is Ernie, and his grandmother goes by the name Skippy. I have no idea why. I just know that Mason was only three weeks old when his grandparents started taking care of him.

God bless you and him and his family always!!!

P.S. As for his singing, to me, his voice is only better now since it did its changing and everything from his album named, I'll See You In My Dreams was written by him. :) :) :)

This duo has no problems expressing their contempt for their town in this funny song:

This is my favorite song by Graham Parker--sums up how I feell about the hellhole I grew up in: "In this dirty town/there's nothing goin' for me.":

God bless you and him always!!!

The Doohickeys are cool: a little like Gram Parsons or Jonny Fritz. They have affection, but not reverence, for country music, and have a lot of other funny tunes.

That's a good tune from Reed and Cale. Did Andy Warhol really hate Pittsburgh that much? Maybe so. He bolted for NYC as soon as he finished college.

This song always struck me as being about a small, "nowhere" town...

Yeah, that song could be describing the ****hole I grew up in, left and never went back after my parents moved away.

Here's one by one of my very favorite bands, VOLK. "This town is quicksand/and only the lucky get our alive.":

This is an obvious pick:

And the next one isn't obvious. It's Seals And Crofts doing "Tin Town", an early tune they did before they totally sucked.

"Down where people lose their heads/in Tin Town/has been town"

Nice. I get the impression that jadis likes The Stranglers a little. Nah, probably just my imagination.

The Attractions - Lonesome Little Town

Elvis Costello's former backing band did an album without EC. This is a song from it.
