Default Your all time favorite and currently active group and solo artist

In a lot of cases, the answers to both questions will be identical, but not for everyone--including me. My answers:

All time favorite group: The Fall--no longer active because the group disbanded after lead vocalist Mark E. Smith's death

All time favorite solo artists: Johnny Dowd

Favorite currently active group: The Paranoid Style

All time favorite solo artist: Johnny Dowd. If Dowd dies before I do, and music writers suddenly discover his talent and ask "why wasn't he noticed by more people before?", there's going to be trouble. IT'S BECAUSE YOU CRETINS IGNORED HIM FOR SO LONG!

Would you say Tom Waits is active? The last album was over a decade ago.

Also, some would say The Stranglers are still active but IMO that's a very bad joke.

I've heard of The Fall, as you know, but not the other two! Pls share tracks you particularly like.

I don't follow Waits' career that closely. Has he toured in the not too distant past? If so, I would say he's currently active. But even if he hasn't, unless he's made public statements saying he's done with music, I would consider him currently activem but that's a judgment call for you to make.

If you like the Stranglers' earlier stuff better than anything from any other group, I would say they're your all time favorite but not your currently acive favorite. The Fall's last 3 or 4 albums sucked but I still consider them my all time favorite band, based on all of the previous great stuff.

I'm a little knackered, as the Brits say, from work this week but my posting of some Dowd and Paranoid Style tunes "soon come", as they say in Jamaica.

All-time favorite group would be a tie between The Beatles and XTC.

All-time favorite solo artist would be Frank Zappa (if he fits as a solo artist.)

Favorite currently active group would probably be The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble.

Favorite currently active solo artist would be Richard Thompson.

My all-time favorite group and solo acts are Sawyer Brown and Mason Ramsey, and their newest albums were both released last year. I saw Mason for my first time a year ago and I have tickets to see Sawyer Brown on the sixth of next month. This will be my 4th time seeing them if you include my first time which was just for a few minutes back in 1986 when I was only four years old. I cried because I couldn't take how loud the music was and so I was taken home. My second time seeing them was in 1994 I believe it was which is the year that I turned twelve, and it was my first time seeing them all the way through. My last time seeing them was almost 20 years ago on the 4th of July weekend in 2005. To me, they are worth going back for because they still give the fans a butt kicking show after all of these years or should I say decades?

God bless you and the guys and Mason always!!!

Holly (a girl who hopes to see Mason again someday)

A very interesting musician and lyricist.

Quote:
Johnny Dowd (born John David Dowd; March 29, 1948, in Fort Worth, Texas) is an American alternative country musician from Ithaca, New York. Typical of his style are experimental, noisy breaks in his songs and strong gothic (in the sense of dark and gloomy) elements in the lyrics as well as in the music. There is also a strong undercurrent of black humor and the absurd in his work.

Although his early albums were most celebrated in the alternative country community, he has never quite fit into any particular genre.[2] As a singer-songwriter, his music is most often compared to that of Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Captain Beefheart.[3]
I don't know anything about country music, alternative or not, but I'm a big fan of the three artists he's most often compared to.

The Waits comparison is the lazy, fallback pigeonhole for every hack music writer. Dowd sounds nothing like him. The only similarity is attitude—both of them do things their own way. And a lot of Dowd’s work has nothing to do with country music. I do appreciate your kind words about his music.
