My first one of 2026:

3/8/2026: Deke Dickerson and Los Straitjackets - Woodward Theater, Cincinnati, Ohio

LS played short sets on their own and also backed Deke on two longer sets. Total time, not including intermission, was just shy of two hours, very generous for a club show. And the Woodward Theater, despite the name is more like a large club than a theater as such. In any event, it was a fine show I may write more about later on.

3/29/2026: Handsome Dick Manitoba - Southgate House Revival, Newport, Kentucky

Former Dictators lead singer and his adept band put on a good rock and roll show. Dick's stage patter had a lot of New Yawk attitude but that's OK. Opening sets by Rat Trap (good) and The Strains (very good), the latter being the first punk band I've ever seen with three guitar players--I'll be checking out more of their music.

Always arrive in time to see the opening act--you may find a new favorite. I first saw Drivin' N' Cryin' when they opened for Supersuckers and really enjoyed their set. Seeing them headline was even better. I'm surprised this band isn't bigger than they are. Their music has the ability to appeal to fans of different rock and roll subgenres.

William Matheny (formerly of Southeast Engine and occasional member of The Paranoid Style) is a fine songwriter who's getting better. Most of his set was from his new album, Material Witness, and the new stuff held it's own and then some with his older material. The further his music gets from country the more I like it, and this gig showed him expanding his musical range. He ended his approximately one hour set with a blistering version of "Living Half To Death", one of his very best tunes. This was a free show at Fountain Squre, which is a large open plaza in downtown Cincinnati which hosts a lot of free concerts, mainly local bands but occasional touring acts like good Mr Matheny. I spoke with William after the show and he remembered meeting me after another show a few years back (welll, he and I have also exchanged a few emails). May he someday be so successful he'll forget who I am!

I saw the Sawyer Brown band on July 4th, and I have tickets for John Foster later in the fall.

I had planned on seeing Maiden, but the two venues closest to my home both had standing room only or floor seats, which are essentially standing room as well. I'm too old for that. I go to a show, I'm getting a seat with a view.

Chuck played his usual generous set, clocking in at a little ove two hours (not counting a short intermission. The show was mostly acoustic except for Stephanie Finch's organ on one song. If you ever get the chance to see this guy live, do so. You won't be disappointed.

The City of Cincinnati seems to have revived including national touring acts in its free summer outdoor concert series. Must have gotten some new corporate sponsors, including the company that charges too much for my monthly parking. But not all national touring acts are the same. William Matheny, whom I saw on July 29, has much less of a following than The Jayhawks, the band I saw last night. Lesson learned: for the bigger acts, arrive early so you can be toward the front with the serious fans, instead of the back with the jerkoffs who just want to drink and blab with their friends. Why don't they they stay at home, put on some music and blab there? I was still able to hear most of the show, though, and The Jayhawks played an agreeable set of pop/rock. Maybe I can see them again at a venue where people pay to get in and are less likely to want to prove their mouths are large and their minds are weak.
