Music's dead.

Does anyone else agree that music is much more dull and unenthusiastic as it once was back in the day? Doesn't anyone think that artists don't pull so many risks, or write good songs anymore?...

(With the exception of a few bands: SOAD, Vines...etc.)

Cheese 11-12-2005 03:15 PM

What day? Yesterday?

riseagainstrocks 11-12-2005 03:16 PM

Sleep Terror
Between the Buried and Me
With Passion
Red Sparowes
The Black Dahlia Murder
Carcass
The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza
Kissing Booth
Into The Moat

all amazing, original, and talented. pushing the boundries of their music.

mosesandtherubberducky 11-12-2005 03:17 PM

Yes, music is starting to decay. There needs to be someone to come along and revitalize it. But the problem lies in the public. Their musical taste buds have been slowly numbed from years of a decline is creativity and the fact that everything has become so readily avalible. I know some people that instead of going to concerts the will buy the live DVD or watch it on T.V. and if that is what is happening right now wait another 5 years and watch ticket sales decline to honest shows.

Merkaba 11-12-2005 03:27 PM

It's us. Not us specifically, but the public in general.

A band as good as Led Zeppelin could come along and we'd winge that they're too much like Led Zeppelin.

Heck I'd put a million bucks on the fact that there is another Led Zeppelin out there but no one is willing to sign them up because they aren't Nickelback enough.

Rise made some good mentions but outside of the US, how big are they? Because over here we haven't heard of them and it's not the bands fault, just no one is willing to promote "original" bands worldwide.

Expletive Deleted 11-12-2005 03:43 PM

Music isn't dead, it's the record execs for the all the major labels who are dead. None of them are willing to take risks signing bands that they don't think will be #1 on the top 40. Amazing bands are left singing to indie labels where they get little to no marketing, and so the general public never hears a peep about them (in most cases).

mosesandtherubberducky 11-12-2005 03:45 PM

^ you have a point

boo boo 11-12-2005 04:19 PM

Music isnt dead, its just average bands who make a lot of money for imitating other bands, because being retro is whats hot, not doing something new and innovative, thats why all the most popular bands are retro. Jet(imitating AC/DC), The Darkness(imitating Queen), Interpol(imitating Joy Devision), The Vines(imitating Nirvana), The Hives(imitating The Rolling Stones), The Killers(imitating Duran Duran) and Franz Ferdinand(whoever they are imitating, they are the worst band ever). Its about corperate magazines like rolling stone and bloated record companys who try to push the image that Rock N Roll covers all music, which is a lie. Rock N Roll has become crap, in order for music to progress, Rock N Roll needs to die.

mosesandtherubberducky 11-12-2005 04:25 PM

But I like Interpol:(

I hate them, not only because they are not original, but also because i dont even like Joy Division...Joy Division were original though.

mosesandtherubberducky 11-12-2005 04:29 PM

At least you have a reason, most of the people I know don't like someone because they are different. Like have you heard of The Features?

TheBig3 11-12-2005 04:37 PM

Did you really say the Vines were taking risks?

Listen you, by the grace of god, were blessed to have found this place. Everyone comes here listening to their local KROQ offspring, and knowing classic rock, new **** and little else.

Im not going to blow my own horn here, but if you asked Me, Rise Against, Misfits, and Boo boo what bands were really a breath of fresh air in music today, you'd easily get 40 diffrent bands...at the very least.

MB is a portal to music you didn't know existed before, all you have to do is say something like "I really like [band] because of [reason] and we could **** out 14 bands that may do something similar but not at all the same.

Music's dead if you listen to corporate play lists, but in the seedy nightclub underbelly of music, there lies a heartbeat of passionate music and the deathrattle of of the corporate behemoth.

Its actually not that bad right now, if your 14 today, then you missed the horrid stretch of 98-01. Todays music seen is far more varied (even on three-peice suit radio) and its in no way dying.

jibber 11-12-2005 04:37 PM

first of all, exactly how far back in the day are you referring? and second, no i don't agree, there's been a stead stream of crappy commercialized pop music for decades, it's only more moticable now with easier means of communication through mass media, and creations like mtv and muchmusic (for those of us in canada). Inspired and innovative music still exists, we just don't hear it played on the radio 100000 times a day or see the videos constantly replayed on TV.

True, i think everyone likes bands that no one else cares about, i mean i bring up obscure bands from the 70s like Focus and Gentle Giant, and people dont know what the hell im talking about, yet a lot of the bands i see mentioned on this forum i have never heard of in my life, its pretty ironic.

on the contrary, i think music now is becoming quite fresh and exciting. you've just got to look for it.

Merkaba 11-12-2005 05:00 PM

So should we assume he's talking mainstream or altogether?

half_baked87 11-12-2005 05:31 PM

MUSIC is not dead, its just 99% of mainstream music is nostalgic recycled crap. notice how if theres one band that comes into the mainstream with a fresh sound, sooner or later theres a few thousand of them that just sound the same? ex. the entire seattle grunge scene in the early 90s (although i like grunge), or green day followed by blink followed by NFG etc... or creed, followed by nickelback followed by default followed by a bunch of other muffled bastards droning generic lyrics over an all too familiar song. as many people have said, most corporate radio stations and record labels simply use this years "hot button" to make as much money as they can, until theres another trend, then again they latch on. my advice is to just dig deep to find something original that makes you shake. so no, i dont beleive music is dead, and i dont think it will ever die, as long as theres a kid with an open mind, something to say and an instrument to speak through, there will be passion and originality in music.

98-01 had some of the best releases of the late 90s and early 00s, including (to name a select few)...

The Boy With the Arab Strap Belle & Sebastian
Orange Rhyming Dictionary Jets to Brazil
Mezzanine Massive Attack
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Neutral Milk Hotel
Agaetis Byrjun Sigur Ros
Since I Left You The Avalanches
Summerteeth Wilco
Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea PJ Harvey
Tourist St. Germain
Discovery Daft Punk

Hardly what I'd call a "horrid" stretch.

And Interpol are a good band, and really don't sound all that much like Joy Division. Franz Ferdinand's S/T was good also (can't say the same for their new one), however they do sound a lot like a less political, more danceable Gang of Four.

Music has always been fresh and exciting, there's never been a stretch of time where music experienced a bad period. No matter what year, era, or decade you pick, there's guaranteed to be a ton of good bands from it.

a rare compliment from Big3. I'm touched.

And I agree with what you said as well. MusicBanter has turned into a "everything you knew about music is totally not true and here is some good **** nigga!" kinda site.

and I love it.

Music is getting worse....the people who like the older stuff are just getting older and aren't liking the newer stuff.

Did that make sense?

It doesn't explain how music is getting worse.

Everything Changes
live with it

Have to say it's got worse.
There's only four in the first list that are awful whereas there are thirteen in the second
So IMHO it has definitely slid

Look at it this way everyone: as the saying goes, is the glass half full or half empty? Is music crap because you want it to be, or is it good?

I was hoping someone would understand what I'm talking about then I would too...!!!

Ok, it's about the way you see music, are you always negative towards new music, which may be preventing you from finding out that certain new music is good?

Is that better?
