Indie is the most pointless genre ever.

It just tends to mean any white guitar band who doesn`t play metal these days

Independant labels are getting kind of huge, too. Ex. Epitaph.

Emo = emotional hardcore.

Indie means music on an Independent label. It's just people have blown it out of context and are calling everything indie. It's not pointless, it's actually one of the best genres of music on the planet today. It provides good talent that's just waiting to be discovered, and lets a band grow without being under the watchful eye of things like MTV that basically convert a band into being another clone.

When isn't bubblegum pop played on the radio. Or hip hop. Or whatever.
In my eyes, its mainly all the same. No matter what the classification threads say here, they all produce the same ty music to me.

Yeah, because Classical is SO like Bubblegum Pop. Anyway Urban, there is still plenty of undiscovered talent out there, making a name for themselves on the Indie circuit now. It's just that Indie has become more popular recently, with the kind of people that watch MTV even watching over it, waiting to see if any 'r0xxorz bandz' are out there that the TV doesn't play. There are plenty of the 'so-called' Indie bands that HAVE a major record label yet the idiots still call them Indie. But there is also the 'proper' indie music that can be found. It's like Dance. You have the sh*tty Dance songs that appear on MTV and the like, but then you get the better less mainstream Dance in the clubs.

It`s not happened recently hence my 15 years comment. All thoughtout the 90s major labels were putting bands on their own subsiduary lables to give them 'indie appeal'.The whole thing is a load of bollocks , you can`t judge bands by which record labels they`re on.

I didn't know about that. But to be honest that's exactly the same as punk-bands not wearing big brand clothes or appearing on big name shows because they want to look punk. I think that's pointless aswell. Surely the Punk way is not giving a dam about what other people think, so they shouldn't give a dam about what the punk fans think if they suddenly appear on Saturday Night Live or wear some Nike trainers. I like Punk music, but the whole punk ethos is stupid and childish to me.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-22-2006 11:04 AM

I`ve always found it funny it`s usually punk bands & fans who are usually the first to yell 'sell out' out at a band when the band that started off the whole movement admitted they were in it for the money right from the start.

certain labels though will give you an idea of what kind of music your getting. Im not talking about major labels though, but I will be more likely to pick up a band that ive never heard of because of the label they are associated with. Profane Existence wont put out a Yanni album if you get what Im sayin.

Oh yeah I get that , there are certain bands I would be more likely to check out because they are on a small label I trust.

But when it comes down to it you judge that band on what they sound like you don`t listen to it because they`re on that label.

TrampInaTux 02-22-2006 11:13 AM

Urban I'm getting you're talking about John Lydon here? And anyway I'm not to sure about the whole judging a band by the label thing... on one hand I think you should listen to the music, but on the other hand I compare it to cars-you want to buy a Ferrari and you can't test drive it of course, but you still buy it because it's a Ferrari. You don't know what it's like to drive, but you still drive it. I still have to go with my first option though. I would never buy a band because of the label, mostly because I don't pay much attention to labels anyway.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-22-2006 11:17 AM

I`ve never cared about record labels

There`s maybe a couple I liked (Creation for example) but other than that , if it`s great it`s great if it`s sh*t it`s sh*t , whether it comes on on Sony , Domino or 13 amp.

Fenixpunk 02-22-2006 12:33 PM

i wont buy a cd just because its on a certain label..well, i will to listen to them, then if i like it i will buy more from them, if not, i dont. I wouldnt buy a band that i already know i dont like because of the label they are on, but ive picked up alot of music from bands ive never heard of because i trust that particular label to put out good music, doesnt mean that i have a commitment to that label only though..like you said, good music is good music regardless of what its on.
