Which Band/Artist Came Out Of Your Town?
Was there a music artist or band that came from your town or community that later went on to become well-known? Tell your memories of them before they made it big....did you see them play the local clubs...did you go to school with them...do they ever come back to their beginnings, their roots? Do they "give back" to their community in any way?
Though I never had a chance to see him, Dave Matthews is from Charlottesville, Virginia. And Missy Elliot came from Portsmouth, Virginia. Perhaps lesser known, is Robbin Thompson of Richmond, Virginia who co-wrote "Sweet Virginia Breeze" with Steve Bassett, which became a finalist in the Virginia State Song contest. |
As I grew up in Manchester, England, I think there were a few. The one band that actually meant anything to me or influenced me though were James. I didn't get to see them before they 'made it' unfortunately as I was only just old enough for concert going when they became well known.
I don't know about giving back to their community but they put on a brilliant show when they play their home town. I've been to see them twice and one time in particular they were playing songs off their very earliest album and the crowd was going absolutely wild. Their music is fantastic. Of course, there was also Oasis more recently, who I really liked at the time. I went to see them too, but couldn't get tickets when they played Maine Road and ended up going to see them at Balloch Castle in Scotland. It was a fab day especially as I got right in the crush in the front row, but probably not the same as seeing them in Manchester. I wasn't really a fan until they were already famous though. Still I'm quite proud of the musicians that have come from my area, I mean if we expanded it out into the north-west the Beatles only came from just up the road from me in Liverpool! And of course how much more inspirational could you get. |
The Early November and Goo Goo dolls are two of my favorite bands, they came out of Buffalo NY. NFG is from Coral Springs, which is close to me.
|
I know that NFG came out but I think that nonpoint also came from Miami
:band: |
Not sure if any of you have heard of The Nadas, but they're from the Des Moines area. They're really big regionally in the Midwest, anyways.
|
Earth Crisis...
but they suck. |
no they don't thats all opinion...
I have no idea about my specific area or DC for that matter...something needs to be looked into... |
Birmingham gave to the world Black Sabbath, the Moody Blues, ELO, Duran Duran, Traffic, Steve Winwood, Joan Armtrading, Ocean Colour Scene, Napalm Death, The Streets, and we were the only city in the Midlands that would allow Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham into our clubs, as he was deemed too loud everywhere else. Birmingham was also where Robert Plant and Bonham got their first breaks in the music business before being introduced to Jimmy Page, and the rest of their story, is indeed, history.
There's also a great underground scene again, with the metal and pop punk stars of the future hopefully playing the pubs and clubs now. My personal favourites are Distophia who play quite a sugary punk-lite sound, and Afterburn, who rock in an AC/DC style. |
whether or not you like earth crisis's music, as a band , they were ****ty dudes. any band that takes the straightedge and vegan culture and turns it into violence is ****ty.
|
Well, lots of people from "around" my town, but actually from Virginia Beach the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Pharrell and Chad from N.E.R.D and The Neptunes
|

yes, Simple Plan are from where I live. It doesn't mean that I love them but my friend knows some of the members and she said they're pretty cool to be around with. There's also Celine Dion, but hell.. who cares about her anymore? :P there's other bands, but I cant think of them or you just don't know them

|
UB40 came from Birmingham 2, how could u forget them?!! :D
|
RiseAgainst, You come from DC and dont know any bands who originated in that area? The whole DC hardcore scene started there, man! Banned in DC, the mother f-ing Bad Brains!? Holy god, sorry I get a little carried away. Me, I'm from the middle if no where, and no one even remotely famous has stepped within 1000 km of my home. But my bands are here... You shall soon see...
|
Not that he's much of a great rapper but Pitbull is from Miami (although Dammit Man is pretty catchy), and on the brighter side Trick Daddy and the whole Slip N' Slide crew is from Miami and I'm glad they represent.

And not to forget one of the biggest band ever ... UB40. How can you them for christs sake :yikes: |
My locals...
Belle & Sebastian - They've been around so long I never seen them before they were big, but they kick around everywhere, we shop in some of the same shops, drink in the same pubs... its not a big deal when you see them anymore. Franz Ferdinand - Been going to the same art school club as them for ages, and they, along with Belle & Sebastian were kicking about my local pub on Hogmanay for the bells. Seen them before they were really big and loved it. Snow Patrol - Wow, been into this lot for years, first seen them play about 5 or 6 years ago. They're not even from here, but formed here. I have friends who are friends with Gary, but I haven't met them personally. No desire to. Teenage Fanclub - Another local band, can't believe it but I very recently found out my aunts best mate is Jerry's sister. All the time I've known her and I didn't know her bro was in Teenage Fanclub till i saw a cd in my aunts collection and she casually replied "Oh thats just my friend's brothers band." Delgados - Also kick around all the time. Beta Band - Okay they're from Edinburgh but I still managed to start chatting to them in a bar queue, completely unaware of who they were until people started letting them skip to the front. I totally screwed this one up, I totally didn't believe them when they offered me backstage passes to their final ever gig the following night. I'm sure they found it endearing. I think thats about it that you'd really know. Edit: Sons and Daughters. Friend of a friend is the lead singer's brother, know them that way and also seen before they were big (not that I'd really say they are yet... but they will be). |
of the bands I listen to a global threat came from my state....
That's all I know about... |
off the top of my head the most well known i can think of is
Jimmy Eat World, Blind Melon, Meat Puppets The most well known punk band is probably Contravene. Ska = Kongo Shock Slayer lives here, as well as Alice Cooper and i think Soulfly still do, not sure. Im sure theres more, theres so many bands out here. |
Um...well where i was born only one that comes to mids is the black halos.Where i llive Death cab for cutie *cries*
|
well techically i live in london, though surprisingly their isnt too many bands from here at the moment- razorlight, elbow, the libertines, bloc party, athlete and ikara colt(probably many more) are all i can think of mainstream wise. a couple of bands that may be big, clearway and the phantoms.
|
none, but we have a dinky little recording studio around here called mushroom productions...Johnny Rotten has been there once, but they mainly record garage bands and stuff...but will in the near future hear from them on the conformist MTV

Robert Plant drinks down the pub not far from me. My mates are mates of his son. Jason Bonham used to read his reviews in Kerrang in W.H.Smiths in town. I drive almost past his dads grave on the way to work.
