well Aeroplane is about how mangum wishes he could somehow meet and save anne frank, so i mean, that's not exactly a happy tone, even if you don't think its the saddest

That's just the theme, the lyrics and music aren't actually sad, with a few exceptions.

The song itself isn't very sad, and their entire first album is pretty light stuff. In The aeroplane's only sad part of the time.

Yeah, who the are you to decide what's sad and what isn't. Just cause something isn't sad for you doesn't mean it won't be for someone else.
