I can't believe this isn't a thread yet.
We've all been there: you have your friends who don't listen or "get" the same bands you listen to and love so much. Ever tried justifying Neutral Milk Hotel, Captain Beefhart, Guided by Voices, No Age, Sun O))) and MuM without sounding like an idiot? Without them frowning at what they hear? Share!

EDIT:System of a Down, Coheed and Cambria, and Elton John are the big ones; but in some cases Queen, Rush, and At the Drive-In.

my friend used to make fun of Captain Beefheart until i explained to him that most of the crap he listens to (John Frusciante, Black Keys, White Stripes) cited Beefheart as an influence. considering i'm usually the one getting ridiculed for my taste in music i find it amusing when my friends are wrong 99% of the time.

To be fair to your friends.
Thurtson Moore was influenced by Metal Machine Music, that doesn't mean all Sonic Youth fans have to like Metal Machine Music. |

It's probably the album with the most artistic merit in the history of rock music. No other album says 'FUCK YOU' like Metal Machine Music does. Doesn't mean I'd want to listen to it though.
