Are they not going to be making sound?

Frownland 09-12-2018 05:56 PM

3/10

When you stare at metal bands, they play music. Get learnt.

NSW 09-13-2018 10:26 PM

Finally going to get to see Anathema in Manchester, UK in October. I've missed them so many times already...

Plankton 09-14-2018 08:53 AM

I passed on free Todd Rundgren tickets for tonight. Too far. But... it's Todd Rundgren. And it's free. I've never seen him and I hear his shows are always unique. I'm a little conflicted right now. Argh.

Too late.

Holy hell!

Big Ears Festival 2019

Frownland 09-25-2018 09:11 AM

ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO!

"And more to come." Don't know if I can handle it. Glad that Thumbscrew is playing too, I was planning on skipping Code Girl.

Plankton 09-25-2018 09:26 AM

You better check out both of those Frisell shows, or I'll find you and do stuff. You can lie about it tho.

grindy 09-25-2018 09:31 AM

Frisell is quite overrated.

Frownland 09-25-2018 09:32 AM

I didn't have the heart to say it. Might still catch the group performance though.

Plankton 09-25-2018 09:34 AM

I still think he's groovy.

Yeah, last year a guy stopped me on the street to tell me that
I was the only other person he knew that owned a particular
Art Ensemble t-shirt I was wearing.

I'm not skipping any Halvorson stuff. Of course, I say that,
but we again have the problem of waaaaay too much stuff
to choose from for only 4 days. It'll drive you cRaZy!

After the festival, they send you a survey
"too many days? too few days? just right?"
I always say "too few." ...and they somewhat
waste the Thursdays and Sundays by not filling
them up too. Hey, if someone can't beat the streets
and clubs for 12+ hours a day for only 4 days,
then they don't need to be there, but it'd be nice if
they'd spread it out. I wanna see about 80% of that line-up.

I really respect Halvorson branching out and diversifying, but the vocal jazz bent really isn't my thing.

Choosing which ones to go to is going to be rough. Must sees for me: Alvin Lucier, Irreversible Entanglements, Evan Parker/Matt Wright Trance Map+, Schlippenbach Trio, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Thumbscrew, Tim Berne's Snake Oil, at least one of the Wadada Leo Smith shows, and Yves Tumor.

rostasi 09-25-2018 10:08 AM

Oh, I like Code Girl. Amirtha Kidambi reminds me of the best elements of
the late 60s/early 70s era free jazz people like Jeanne Lee. She even incorporates
some traces of Asha Puthli (like when Ornette used her voice). I think it's a good,
growing embodiment of the rekindled social consciousness jazzoetry movement.

Along with all of the great music - most of which goes off without a hitch -
you'll run into some of these musicians pretty regularly on the street,
in cafes and bars in that area - it's a pretty compact square mile area where things happen.
I've had the chance to have breakfast with Carla Bley & Steve Swallow, dinner with Philip Jeck,
chatted with Anoushka Shankar at our hotel, a.o. You'll really have a great time there.

My wife got the latest notice from Big Ears
and she was going down the list and just
giggling with delight: "Wow! Just look at these first three!"
(Art Ensemble ..., Spiritualized, Meredith Monk).

BillySparks 09-29-2018 11:15 AM

Mountain Goats at the end of November is all thats on my radar.

Dr_Rez 09-29-2018 12:34 PM

Just saw Nine Inch Nails at Red Rocks in Colorado, would like to go back and see something else there. Most beautiful venue I have ever been to.

I just did a quick google search and yeah that venue looks tight. Reminds me of the Gorge ampitheatre in Washington which I've yet to go to as well.

Frownland 10-05-2018 06:36 PM

Nice. They were great when I saw them a few years ago.

BillySparks 10-05-2018 06:39 PM

Alejandro Escovedo just announced he is playing here so thats a definite.

Based on the 10 minutes of shouting at the sound crew to turn up the bass, I'm gonna go with yes. Obviously a little put on, but he wears it well.

Just the best.

Frownland 10-05-2018 08:28 PM

I came for Lydon, I left worshipping Lu Edmonds.

rostasi 10-05-2018 08:30 PM

Well, anyway, if you are, then I don’t know what you’re on about...
but I’m gonna be at the Granada for that show if I’m back from
Canada by then. Seen P.I.L. 8 of the 9 times I’ve had a chance
and the Pistols on January 10, 1978. Saw that Snyder interview
during the original broadcast. There’s also a reunion of the two
of them years later when Lydon mellowed.

If there's one thing Lydon loves it's putting artists on pedestals.

No, that's OK. I just didn't know what you were flapping yer jaw about.
I'll probably be there. Not expecting to have to stay in BC much later than the 19th.
I come to Austin for shows too. Kraftwerk, Magma, ...
