Cypress Hill and Atmosphere

The Batlord 07-28-2021 09:28 PM

Going for Cypress Hill?

Frownland 07-28-2021 09:36 PM

Atmosphere is decent but ja I'm going with the intention of getting stupid high.

The Batlord 07-28-2021 09:47 PM

I'd like him way better if he would rap about anything other than smoothbrain positivity.

Raime 07-29-2021 09:07 PM

Dead Can Dance
Uniform
Low

have been added to the list. I just need some techno peeps to come to DC at least to get me set.

DianneW 08-01-2021 05:35 PM

Very Hard to find local gigs here, but Cognac is not so far..will be going to a few of them soon....

He was better than I expected but also the corniest thing I've ever seen.

Cypress Hill was dank. They were all on point but there was some beat juggling **** that was blowing my mind, probably the highlight of the show. Smoked all my joints too fast though.

Incredible. Ish isn't even my favourite part of Digable but he's a force of nature on the stage. They had a live band that was funky as ****.

NightSky99 09-03-2021 12:04 PM

September 23 in an ancient Greek theatre
Tribute to classic rock (Scorpions, Queen, Metallica etc)
My favourite genre!!

update I bought tickets and then wasn't able to make it to Asheville :(

Mucha na Dziko 09-06-2021 11:36 AM

Probably a small venue bebop jazz on wednesday and thursday

And I'll try to find a Blues-oriented bar somewhere around here

grindy 09-08-2021 01:23 AM

Gonna see Little Simz in January.
Hyped af for this.
In case someone missed it, the new album is fire. And if the tiny desk concert is any indication this will be an amazing live experience.

Frownland 09-16-2021 09:51 AM

Got my Big Ears ticket

Especially looking forward to John Zorn, Angel Bat Dawid, Sparks, Sons of Kemet (missed them last time and regretted it), Marc Ribot, Mdou Moctar, Andrew Cyrille, 75 Dollar Bill, Jaimie Branch Fly or Die, Kris Davis Diatom Ribbons, Gyan Riley, Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, Ches Smith, and Craig Taiborn. Betting that Angel Bat Dawid will be the best show at the festival, she seems really intense live.

Mine will be Rammstein in Cardiff Wales next summer. Was postponed due to covid.

Also have Offspring in Cardiff later this year, then the Darkness in Bristol.

Missed OME but Armand Hammer really killed it after spending a couple songs getting the soundguy to turn them up. They did tracks from all over their discography, Barbarians being one of the standouts. They brought out a horn player and guitarist for some Small Bills tracks that got pretty ****in funky. As predicted they brought out Earl for Falling Out of the Sky before Earl and Alchemist took over to do Mtomb (one of my fave tracks from him, was kinda surprised) and some new material. The crowd got really excited for Earl and I was too but felt like they should've been that excited for woods. They also did a bunch of woods' solo material, mostly from Hiding Places. His performance of Houthi was really astounding.

I always viewed Elucid as the better emcee of the duo while woods was more humble in that lane with better poetry, but Elucid kind of disappointed me on that end. It was too close to the studio album in a way that was almost jukeboxy. Great performance still but I was expecting some god tier on that end. Was very impressed with woods' performance honestly, it was more like hearing an impassioned rant in a smoke sesh than someone doing a song and dance. He kept his mystique up, squatting whenever Elucid was rapping so that he looked like he was in the audience and telling the venue to turn down the stage lights. Was rad, hopefully I can catch them again.

Saw a full performance of Die Fledermaus while working as an usher yesterday. Thought it was annoyingly goofy and the performers were pretty mid. The pianist was rad though.

The Batlord 10-29-2021 11:39 AM

Whenever I see or hear a mention of Die Fledermaus.

Fellow postpunk obsessives/noise enjoyers, what acts would you go see out of this lineup? I want to see Caribou for sure

You don't like/know Machine Gun Kelly?

rostasi 02-25-2022 07:42 PM

There’s three I’d really like to see on Saturday night: Khruangbin, 100 Gecs and the excellent Sampa the Great.

but at least it's novel

That's my impression too. People put them in their instagram stories all the time but there wasn't a single track that stayed with me or made me want to listen to it again.

rostasi 02-28-2022 01:40 PM

Yeah, Khruangbin are about as bland as every other band out there that mixes '68-'75 era Thai funk,
Jamaican reggae, and Iranian pop with props to the funkiness of Stax and soulfulness of Philly Int'l.

One of the things I learned from a lifetime of record store working, managing and owning is that
it's easy to become one big record store pie where very few there want to cut the first slice.

As for seeing 100 Gecs live? Sure, why the hell not?

they sell records like hot cakes baffling literally everyone who works at my shop

yuppies in Austin just buy it because someone told them to, I'm not sure they ever even spin them

Probably has a lot to do with their hawt bass player. :pimp:

SGR 06-02-2022 06:35 PM

You're a War on Drugs fan Plank?

music_collector 06-02-2022 09:31 PM

War On Drugs is pretty good. Their last album was solid.

As for me, I have Roger Waters in a month, followed by Ghost in the fall. I'm going to try to see Coheed and Cambria. That will be a tough ticket to get.

I liked A Deeper Understanding. Haven't heard the latest yet.

Coheed can be hit/miss for me but they're a very talented bunch. We used to play Welcome Home in a cover band I was in. That was fun to play.

music_collector 06-03-2022 05:12 PM

I think Deeper Understanding is the band's best album to date.

I saw the band open for Jethro Tull once. My father was with me. He had never heard War on Drugs before. He told me that he ordered 3 albums the next day.

Plankton 06-09-2022 09:42 AM

I just found out I'm going to Steely Dan/Snarky Puppy for Pop's Day. Sweet.

Too bad Corey Henry isn't in the band anymore, but I'm sure they'll still rock Lingus.
