Overrated

Who would you say is overrated?

Coldplay-Even though I like some of their music, they are still heavily overrated.

sleepy jack 02-05-2006 05:33 AM

Weezer.
Fall Out Boy(specially that sugar song).
Bloodhound Gang.
System Of A Down.
Green Day.
CKY.
Libertines.
Babyshambles.

TrampInaTux 02-05-2006 05:35 AM

Libertines and go for me aswell. I wouldn't say that for Babyshambles, because I don't think they are thought of that highly anyway.

She's Lost Control 02-05-2006 06:01 AM

Nirvana, for obvious reason, Babyshambles, whatever they're said to be, they are much worse, I saw 'em at Glasto ... >_< Bloc Party are sooo hyped up, I find them so boring.

bungalow 02-05-2006 11:28 AM

Wow, i thought you said you wasnt this ignorant, i was wrong, ha...Bland?...There are many bland bands, Zeppelin aint one of them, like them or not, they were THE band of the 70s, period, they influenced countless bands, including bands you yourself like...Recycled?...All music pretty much is recyling, you cant name me one band who didnt take ideas from others and reused them, oh Zeppelin took some ideas from blues musicians so that makes them bad, your knowledge of music is lacking, for one thing, most blues musicians use the same licks all the time, many blues players have used the same licks, because 12 barre blues is very limited in how many licks you can play, plus blues players do homages...So if Zeppelin do a lick that sounds like Howlin Wolf, it must mean they ripped off Howlin Wolf and aint nothing but bland, reycled crap.

Give me a break, stop trying to be cool.

bungalow 02-05-2006 07:12 PM

I hate Nirvana too. They suck, possibly worse than Zeppelin.

I am glad that you approve. I am tempted to say that Pink Floyd suck as well, but I haven't heard enough to make that descion.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-05-2006 07:20 PM

I think Led Zep are overrated.

A decent c0ck rock band who just happened to sell millions

I doubt you have heard enough Zeppelin to make a decision.

You sure? I own Led Zep I, Led Zep II, Led Zep III, How The West Was Won, and best of the early days. I have heard plenty of Led Zeppeling, and they suck. And you are right, Blues musicians do recycle riffs. And it gets old. Zeppelin recycles riffs, and they don't even do it well. They suck. Seeing as how I don't agree with you, I must be an idiot. Oh well, you tell me that I have bad taste, and then you go and put on an Emerson Lake and Palmer album.....

Yeah, but they were one of the first c0ck rock bands, and they were one of the essential building blocks of heavy metal...Plus they influenced tons of bands, including your favorite bands, AC/DC, Janes Addiction, etc.

bungalow 02-05-2006 07:26 PM

Just because they influenced bands that we like, doesnt mean we have to like them. Do you go home and listen to the Gregorian Chant? Do you like the Gregorian Chant? YOU DON'T!!!!!! OMG YOU ARE AN IDIOT! THE GREGORIAN CHANT INSPIRED ALL MUSIC! Therefore you must be an idiot because you don't like it. You have bad taste. Your musical Knowledge is lacking. You are a NOOb, you suck balls, and you are a ****ing idiot (sound familiar?)

I didnt you say had to like them, but you should respect them, calling them a bland ****ty band is nothing but sacrilage, if you ask me.

Just to clarify, I realize this is heavily sarcastic, but the Grevorian Chants didn't influence jack ****. Maybe some stuff in opera, or classical (maybe), which maybe gives it some remote ties to prog, but otherwise, no modern rock/pop/jazz/rap/whatever, etc. music has anything to do with Gregorian Chants.

Saying Led Zeppelin took some ideas off of blue artists is like saying Green Day took some ideas off of seventies/early eighties punk bands. Seriously, on the technical side, there was very, very little originality in Led Zeppelin, except for John Bonham. However, they had a totally distinct style, which is what makes them a great band and not a bunch of lame blues ripper-offers. I would definitely not say they are overrated, although they are severely discredited with certain ideas, by most people.

Well, there are prog bands that have some Gregorian influence on their vocal harmonys.

King Crimson and Yes in paticular.

They werent too original no, but neither were The Rolling Stones, since they often did the same things people accuse Led Zeppelin of doing, like reusing the sound of old blues musicians and giving it a extra punch, The Stones even did it more consistantly....Its not like blues rock was all that Zeppelin did, they have MANY good songs that dont really fall into the blues rock category.

Im not bashing The Stones, dont get me wrong, i think they're great. :D

Yeah, I agree with all that, that's what I'm saying. It wasn't technical originality that made Led Zeppelin great, it was their style of playing. And yeah, they had plenty of non-blues songs, but those weren't the kind of thing people hadn't heard before. Not to say that they weren't great songs.

boo boo 02-05-2006 10:59 PM

Dunno, i think Ten Years After and Song Remains The Same were very original songs, Kashmir too.

jazzfromhell 02-05-2006 11:21 PM

I suppose so for the first two; Kashmir, although a great song, sort of sounds like the riff was just taken out of some classical song (none in particular) and repeated over and over again (but there I go contradicting myself from earlier, saying that classical hasn't influenced rock).

Classical has certainly influenced progressive rock, some fractions of it anyway, primarly Symphonic Prog.

jazzfromhell 02-05-2006 11:35 PM

Yeah, that's what I said in my earlier post. But outside of that, what's it influenced (not trying to imply it hasn't influenced any of it, I'm curious)? I suppose there's a bunch of metal that has some classical influences, is there anything else?

You own how many albums and think they suck? Are you kidding? It's Febuary, April 1st is ways away sir.

TheBig3 02-05-2006 11:42 PM

Also I don't want to come off as a Zep fan boi here, but this is the same argument used every time.

Did Led Zep rip off their country riffs? Or their Folk riffs? or how about that salsa jam in the middle of Fool in the rain?

I don't ask much, I just ask that you educate yourself enough to speak intelligently. Maybe im asking to much, so if I am, please refrain from "recycling" the same garbage a million other posters here stated. The newbs need the help, you regulars should know better.

jazzfromhell 02-05-2006 11:50 PM

I didn't say that they ripped off the specific riffs of the folk or country or salsa stuff, but it's not like the style had never been used before, but they ripped off the style. And that's fine, because everyone rips off someone else in some way, and Led Zeppelin kicked ass while doing it. However, they shouldn't be credited as original for writing folk songs or mixing latin rhythms into their music.
