I agree totally...

Before men like them, writing and performing music over 400 years ago, what was there?? - Nothing.

Some of the greatest tunes ever are being copied and played to this day. If that's not influential - I don't know what is.

i think.. if it weren't for the Mama's and The Papa's disco wouldn't have happened.. i mean there nothing alike but really pop turned to disco well some of it (i mean kiss even had a number one disco song) Mama's and the Papa's were pop of the 60's still then being considered rock of the 60's at the time. They were a rather popular band more so because of the movement with the hippies andwhat not, i think this band did have alot of influeince.

Mr J Lennon.

It's really an unanswerable question, you could just keep going farther back, but as far as modern, non-classical music is concerned...

...Louis Armstrong is the key figure, and has more influence than any musician of the 20th century.

explosions what do you mean 'even Kiss had a number one disco song'? Even Kiss? You say it as if they are some hardcore rock band. They are glam rock pure and simple. And I would also argue for Elvis Presley. Even though his lyrics were ghost written just look at the following he has. He even re-released a song recently and it topped the charts. Not many artists would be able to do that-not even John Lennon. He re-released Imagine, arguably one of his best songs, and it didn't make number one. And the song Elvis released wasn't even one of his better ones.

I know what type of music they did.. but they were not a disco pop band.. but they did have a disco song.. and even they hated it..

I know they weren't but they were very much a pop band. It would be a crime to class them as rock.

when i said rock i was talking about Mamas and the Papas.. go back a re-rend if in fact thats what you have mixed up..

If they're pop, then the beatles would be also and another thing influentiality and skill are two totally different things.

mamas and the papas and the beatles have different sounds and connceted to a different group of people. both bands sound like pop bands now yes.. but back then they were considered to be rock bands.. before all the heavy bands.. DUH!
